Learn about the culture and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese lantern festivals at the Winter Lantern Festival Washington, located at Lerner Town Square at Tysons II (8025 Galleria Dr, Tysons, VA 22102). Modern LED lights are embellished by traditionally hand-crafted lantern frames made from small pieces of classically made Chinese silk cloth and steel wire. All lanterns are created by artisans, some of which have over 20 years of experience in their trade and bring magical folklorical creatures to life. Each unique piece holds a story of its own that will be told to visitors to help contextualize their experience even more.

“With our lights and lanterns, we hope to provide an unforgettable experience for all. This year, not only will we bring lanterns, we are also excited to bring more family fun such as, dino rides, picture taking opportunities to further expand the entire experience.” The exhibition is held in an outdoor venue with indoor space available if you need to take a break during the 60-120 minutes experience. Though it is held in an outdoor venue, it is a rain or shine event. Feel free to take photos as new this year are a few figures just for picture taking. The venue reminds you to please make sure not to disturb others while taking photos. Professional equipment and tripods are not permitted. “Winter Lantern Festival’s unique luminescent nightwalk brings the culture and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese lantern festivals, where contribution is celebration!”

Yesterday we took a look at Doug Kammerer’s Winter Weather Outlook map and highlighted a few of the important items he went over on a subsequent Facebook live. Today, we’ll be analyzing the outlook as a whole, as many snow lovers are excited for what could bring a few feet of snow to the area.

Kammerer and Storm Team4 state that “we could see one or two big snowstorms that really make their mark on the winter of 2023-2024.” In our eyes, that means a storm that drops at least six inches across the region, but could also bring snow that’s measured in feet to the area. Since the El Niño patter is expected to bring above average temperatures and an active storm track, plenty of storms will come in the form as rain. The snow will be there when we are dealing with colder temperatures, which is what they expect January and February to bring.

Montgomery County native and New Orleans Pelicans rookie Jordan Hawkins, making a start in place of CJ McCollum, scored a career-high 31 points on Monday night in a 116-134 loss to the defending World Champion Denver Nuggets. Hawkins’ coach Willie Green referred to him as fearless, saying, “When he’s open he’s going to shoot it. He’s aggressive and the beauty of it is Brandon, Z, all of his teammates are looking for him.

The young man from Gaithersburg was drafted 14th overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2023 NBA Draft. He is averaging 12.6 and 4.7 rebounds per game coming off of the bench, but earning significant minutes, for the Pelicans this year. Including the seven he hit on Monday night, Hawkins has made 20 three pointers in seven games this season. He has made 11 in his last two, showing that he is the outside-shooter he was drafted to be in the NBA.

Doug Kammerer of NBC4 has released his winter outlook, which is currently only available on NBC4 newscasts. In the outlook he projects as much as 38-52 inches for places like Frederick and Hagerstown, 30-40 inches for places like Gaithersburg, Leesburg, and Rockville, and 22-30 inches for Bethesda, DC, and Prince George’s County.

Kammerer had some of the lowest snow totals projected for last winter, and provided one of the most accurate outlooks for the 2022-2023 winter. This year, he’s going the other way. In a Facebook Live following a 6:50 presentation of the 2023-2024 Winter Outlook, he stated that “if this sets up correctly, we can see more than predicted.”

The coming week is expected to pick up exactly where this weekend left off, with high temperatures expected to reach the 60s and 70s for most of this week.

Today we are expecting partly sunny skies with temperatures getting into the low/mid 60s in the afternoon. Tuesday is expected reach the low 70s with variable cloudiness, but rain is not expected. Wednesday should be similar to today with temperatures getting into the low/mid 60s in the afternoon with plenty of sunshine. Thursday brings the highest chance of precipitation out of this upcoming stretch of four nice days, but right now it’s only at about 25% and it’s also going to be the warmest day of the bunch, likely reaching the mid 70s.

The Maryland Terrapins didn’t have much luck against the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, losing 51-15. The Terps have now lost four in a row and it seems to have even the biggest fans in the crowd confused as a few who attempted to spell out “TERPS!” with body paint couldn’t quite get the order down and were caught on national television spelling out “STREP!” (video below).

With temperatures getting a little colder and a few predictions for higher-than-average snowfall, maybe the young fans were just warning of communicable diseases that come with the season, but it’s more likely the fans were as confused as Maryland’s offense seemed to be against Penn State.

Akon is bringing his “The SuperFan Tour” to the DMV, when he performs at The Fillmore in Silver Spring on Tuesday, November 7th. Akon recently promoted the show on his instagram, referring to Silver Spring as “Silver Springs“, a common mistake among those not familiar with the area. The video can be seen below.

The  Senegalese-American singer, record producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has become an influential figure in modern world music after rising to prominence in 2004 following the release of “Locked Up”, the first single from his debut album Trouble (2004), followed by the second single “Lonely”, which was also a smash hit. Akon’s second album, Konvicted (2006), received three Grammy Award nominations for Best Contemporary R&B Album, and for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Smack That” (featuring Eminem) and “I Wanna Love You” (featuring Snoop Dogg). Both singles became Billboard Hot 100 top ten hits, followed up by “Don’t Matter” and “Sorry, Blame It on Me”. His third studio album Freedom (2008) was led by the single “Right Now (Na Na Na)”.

Chop Robinson, a 6’3, 253 pound Defensive End for the Penn State Nittany Lions, watched his current team beat his previous team as Penn State rolled through Maryland 51-15 on Saturday. Robinson, a Quince Orchard High School graduate and Gaithersburg native who owns his high school’s sack record, was injured two weeks ago against Ohio State, and wasn’t able to play in the last two games, including Saturday’s game against Maryland. The now-Penn State standout is having a great season for the 8-1 Nittany Lions, with five tackles for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble on the season, and hopes to return next week against Michigan. Many analysts and draft experts currently have Robinson going in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Last year, Robinson was selected All-Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches and media, named a Pro Football Focus All-Big Ten second team selection, and earned the team’s Reid Robinson Outstanding Defensive Lineman Award with Adisa Isaac. Appearing in 12 games as a sophomore, he posted 26 tackles (19 solo), 10 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, two pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Prior to the start of this season, Robinson earned preseason second-team All-American honors and was named to the Bednarik Award, Lombardi Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists prior to the start of the season.

Per WMATA: The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is saddened to learn of the passing of former federal Board Member, Board Chair and transit industry titan Mort Downey. Downey served on WMATA’s Board of Directors from 2010-2016 and was the very first federal member appointed to the Board. His decades of transportation experience were invaluable to the Board, particularly in policy setting and oversight.

As Board Chair, he led the Board in taking on some of WMATA’s toughest challenges, including the recruitment and selection of a new General Manager, overseeing Metro’s responses to Federal Transit Administration and National Transportation Safety Board safety findings, and its oversight of Metro’s response to the FTA’s Financial Management Oversight findings.
