Metro Lays Out Potential Service Impacts Needed to Close $750 Million Budget Shortfall in FY25

Per WMATA: Metro detailed its future financial planning to address structural funding issues that will leave a projected $750 million shortfall in the fiscal year 2025 budget when federal covid relief funding runs out. Without an increase in funding, Metro would be forced to make drastic cuts to rail, bus, and paratransit services across the region.

The long-term financial issues facing Metro, come amid improving service, investments in modernization, and growing ridership. As of May, weekday ridership on Metrorail and Metrobus is at 50 percent and 88 percent of pre-pandemic levels, respectively, with ridership as high as 800,000 trips or more combined on bus and rail.

Joe Gibbs Sells Minority Stake of Joe Gibbs Racing to Future Commanders Owner Josh Harris’ HBSE

Future Washington Commanders owner and MoCo native Josh Harris and his sports and property management company Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment LLC (HBSE) has bought a minority equity stake in Joe Gibbs Racing, owned by heralded former Washington head coach Joe Gibbs, according to a report by the Sports Business Journal.

According to the report, Gibbs has told people close to him that he intends to keep the team in the family and would only sell a minority stake. Gibbs will continue running Joe Gibbs Racing while receiving help from HBSE in areas like marketing and sales, plus fundinG. The racing team name will not change and Gibbs will become part owner of the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA New Jersey Devils of the NHL, pending approval by both leagues. As a part of HBSE, Gibbs would also have a minority ownership stake in the Washington Commanders once the sale is finalized.

“LEGO Discovery Center Washington DC” Announces Opening Date; Tickets Now Available

Merlin Entertainments has announced the official opening of the highly anticipated LEGO Discovery Center Washington, D.C., which is due to host a grand ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday the 9th of August. The 32,000-square-foot family attraction will be located in Virginia’s Springfield Town Center and will be a must-visit for locals and visitors with children ages 2 through 12. The bricktastic new attraction will officially open to the public on Monday, Aug. 14. Families can go on the ultimate LEGO adventure by creating and playing together as they make their way through 12 unique zones; from building adventures to an interactive ride.

LEGO Discovery Center Washington, D.C. is a next-generation attraction, reimagined with a brand-new look and design, allowing more family learning through play activities. A team of playmakers and Master Model Builders, led by Master Model Builder Andrew Litterst, will also deliver fun, inspirational, and creative workshops to guests.

Capital Jewish Museum Now Open in DC

The Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum is the first museum in DC dedicated to the story of Jewish life in the nation’s capital region. The Museum officially opened on June 9, 2023 at the corner of 3rd and F Streets NW, welcoming visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore and connect with local Jewish history and the intersections between cultural identity and social activism. Featuring interactive tables, film, historic photographs, and artifacts, the Museum dives deep into history while also creating space for current policy discussion with cutting-edge new technology and exhibit design.

The 32,000 square foot, four-floor, LEED silver-certified Museum features a terrace with views of the Capitol, lobby atrium, flexible education space, three floors of exhibition galleries, and the largest and best-known artifact – Washington’s oldest purpose-built synagogue, which has been moved to its new location and restored. Most of the Museum’s collecLons and archives will be stored on site near the 4th floor staff offices. The Gewirz Gift Shop in the main lobby will offer books and items inspired by the collecLon and exhibitions. The new Museum’s design serves as a transition to the neighborhood’s large-scale mixed-use development, while cradling the landmark building in a light-filled envelope.

Washington Wizards Trade Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns

According to NBA reporter Shams Charania, The Washington Wizards are trading three-time All-Star Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns for Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, a handful of second-round picks, and multiple pick swaps.

Last year, Bradley Beal signed a 5 year / $251,019,650 contract with the Washington Wizards, including $251,019,650 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $50,203,930. In 2023-24, Beal will earn a base salary of $46,741,590, while carrying a cap hit of $46,741,590 and a dead cap value of $46,741,590 (along with a no-trade clause that will be waived for this trade). The Wizards, who recently hired new team president Michael Winger and new general manager Will Dawkins have now unloaded the contract necessary to rebuild.

Temporary Taste and Odor Changes to Tap Water Continue in Parts of Maryland

Last week we let you know that customers served by WSSC Water’s Potomac Water Filtration Plant (Potomac River) may notice a change in the taste and odor of their tap water because of algal activity in the Potomac River. The customer alert remains active on the WSSC website and the service map can be seen below.

Per WSSC, This temporary change is not harmful and is due to an increase in a naturally occurring substance, Geosmin, caused by warmer weather and low water levels in the Potomac River. The naturally occurring compound, Geosmin, has no health effects at the current concentration. Despite the taste and odor issues, the water remains safe, meeting all EPA Safe Drinking Water Act standards.

Local Restaurant, Starvin Marvin, Making Waves With Its “Mambo Sauce”

Starvin Marvin opened in Gaithersburg opened in 1982 and was bought by the Foundas family in 1987. In 1990 the family opened a location in Wheaton that only lasted a few years. In 2009, a Frederick location opened and the Gaithersburg store was sold to two brothers who were longtime employees and wanted something of their own. Those early days at the Gaithersburg store in the 90s, however, were the inspiration for Starvin Marvin Mambo Sauce– the restaurant’s version of “mumbo sauce”, the red/orange tangy sauce made popular in D.C. area takeout spots for decades.

“Mambo was something we experimented with from time time in the 90’s because our Gaithersburg customers would ask for it, but it was actually in Frederick where our Mambo Sauce (found in the grocery stores today) began to come together.” Dino Foundas told us. “We worked with some of our dear employees to perfect the recipe that we’ve started to include in a lot of our dishes” (photos below).

Scotland’s Juneteenth Festival Presents Wyclef, Many Others; Freedom Concert Moves to Anthem in DC

Organizers of the widely expanded Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival will hold a final press conference on Wednesday, June 14, at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Club at 7719 Wisconsin Ave to showcase the more than 20 performing acts that will appear across four main venues on June 17th and the 19th. Those performances include: 1) the opening-night Motown and Oldies Concert and Dance Party beginning at 7 p.m. at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Club; 2) Juneteenth’s Got Talent music and dance performances at the Cabin John Village in Potomac from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; 3) the Children’s Stage at the Cabin John Regional Park at Potomac from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; and the Freedom Day Concert at the Anthem theater at the Wharf in DC.

Freedom Day Concert co-headliner Tarrus Riley will appear at the press conference via ZOOM, while internaTonal superstar Wyclef Jean will be issuing an exclusive video statement about why he is lending his name and talents to this fesTval in honor of the Black communities of Montgomery County in Maryland. Other musicians expected to abend in person include Daryl Davis, the nationally renowned keyboard player who will serve as the music director for the festival’s opening-night. Bill Wax, a master of ceremonies for that same event, will also abend the press conference, as will Montgomery County elected officials.

Quince Orchard Alumnus Charles Lee Hired As Top Assistant Coach by Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics Head Coach, Joe Mazzulla, has hired MoCo native Charles Lee as their lead assistant coach under Mazzulla, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Lee has been an assistant in the NBA since 2014, helping the Milwaukee Bucks win an NBA championship in 2021. Lee, a 2002 graduate of Quince Orchard High School, grew up in Gaithersburg and was a student-athlete at Quince Orchard before moving on to Bucknell, where he attended school and played until 2006.

He went on to play professionally, primarily in Europe and Israel. After his professional career came to an end, he returned to Bucknell as an assistant coach and later served as an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks from 2014-18. He joined the Bucks as an assistant, becoming the top assistant after Darvin Ham left to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. His name appeared as a potential candidate for the Washington Wizards coaching job, prior to the Wizards naming Wes Unseld Jr. their head coach. Now, Lee joins a Celtics team that was a game away from the NBA Finals and is coming off of a 57-win season.

UMD Set to Build $52 Million Basketball Performance Center

Maryland is one of only four institutions in history to have won NCAA championships in both Men’s and Women’s Basketball. With such success, Maryland stands as the only Big Ten school without a dedicated basketball practice facility for both its men’s and women’s teams. Per the University of Maryland, “It is our vision that with the new Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center, the university will continue its ascent in the Big Ten Conference and provide our teams with the infrastructure they need to continue striving for championships. This new center will help provide a transformative experience for our student-athletes, giving them an unmatched opportunity to become top collegiate basketball players.” Video available below.

Citizens & Culture Grand Opening to Take Place on Friday, June 16

Kaldi’s Social House founder Tsega Haile has opened Citizens & Culture – a 15,000 square feet, multi-level fine dining and live DJ and band performance venue located on the border of downtown Silver Spring and Washington, DC. The Georgia Avenue restaurant is currently in its soft opening phase and has a grand opening set for Friday, June 16th.

In addition to fine-dining, the music venue brings a unique concept to the DC-area featuring a ground-floor front patio for outdoor seating leading into an expansive, vaulted ceiling main dining room with full length bar and an exclusive new menu by Executive Chef Ryan Hackney (DC-based chef known for appearances on Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay and Bite Club) and Chief Chef Consultant and Director for Kaldi’s Social House Jessica Shields.
