The family of Susan Loftus would like to invite you to attend a Celebration of Life in her honor. Details on the celebration available below. “Susan passed away August 14, 2023, unexpectedly in her sleep due to a cardiac event. “While we are grieving her passing, we know the last thing she would want is for people to dress in black and be sullen. She was a fun-loving woman and the life of every party. Please come dressed in bright colors to honor her wishes.”

In her 32 years as an educator (physical education), she connected with so many people in our community and beyond. Her life’s work was improving the lives of students, teachers, union members, neighbors, friends, and family. We invite you to come prepared to share your memories of Susan during the celebration.

Current and retired MCPS employees (and one guest) are admitted free into regular season contests hosted by MCPS schools, contingent upon proper identification and the availability of space. MCPS employees include teachers, administrators, coaches and support staff. Acceptable identification includes the following:

The season opens on Friday, Sept. 1. County Sports Zone is the official website for MCPS high school schedules. Opening day for middle schools is Sept. 26, and middle schools schedules are available here.

MCPS is introducing a messaging platform, Remind, that will be used to communicate among MCPS schools, teachers, students and parents. School staff, central office staff, students and parents will all have Remind accounts to enable them to send and/or receive messages using a preferred mode of communication, such as text message, email or phone call and in their preferred language.

When and How Will My School Use it? By winter break, schools will be transitioning to and regularly using the Remind app. When your school makes this transition, parents and older students will receive a text message or email notification from the teacher(s).

Following last night’s varsity football game at Bethesda-Chevy Chase (B-CC) High School between B-CC and Walter Johnson, a fight between students broke out at the nearby Bethesda Metro Station which resulted in serious student injuries. The principals of those schools released the following community message on Saturday afternoon:

Last night, Friday, September 1, B-CC hosted Walter Johnson for our first football game of the fall season. The game went well and was an exciting match. Our fans and attendees were great and everyone seemed to have a fun evening. The safety plans jointly made by both schools worked well on campus and all of the fans left school grounds safely.

“In Virginia, high school football is a way of life, it’s bigger than Christmas day.” -Sheryl Yoast, Remember the Titans

This ain’t a rodeo we’re used to seeing. On occasion, MD and VA teams have played each other, but not often is it a clash of two state title contenders. The last time a MOCO team played a NOVA team was Churchill against Broad Run in 2019. Broad Run won 47-7. Well, if you can beat the traffic and make it down to Lorton this weekend, you’ll be in for a treat. Maryland and Virginia have sent their best as the Quince Orchard Cougars test their might against the South County Stallions.

Below you’ll see the most recent updates or final scores of the 2023 week 1 MCPS football games. The scores will be updated as we receive them. If a score isn’t listed, it’s because we haven’t yet received a report from the game that we can confirm. An ‘F’ signifies the score is confirmed as being final.

Scores from all sports available here.
