MCPS recently shared that five student teams from achieved national acclaim for their projects at this year’s National History Day competition. The annual event, held June 8-12 at the University of Maryland, College Park, brought together nearly 3,000 students from across the United States and abroad.
On October 15, 2024, what began as a routine school dismissal at Rolling Terrace Elementary School quickly turned into a harrowing moment that showcased extraordinary courage. As students were leaving for the day, a young child broke away from a parent and bolted toward the bus lane just as a bus was pulling out. In that split second, Jefferson Reyes, a fifth-grade member of the school’s safety patrol, reacted instantly– leaping into action to pull the child from harm’s way and likely saving a life.

Westland Middle School, located at 5511 Massachusetts Ave. in Bethesda, will be closed on Monday, June 16, following significant damage caused by a downed tree. The removal of the tree has necessitated the closure of several classrooms, and operations for Tuesday have not yet been determined. A message went out to the Westland community on Sunday night:
MCPS has announced that Douglas Rivera is this year’s High School Counselor of the Year. According to MCPS, Rivera is entering his 10th year as a school counselor at MCPS, where he continually exemplifies commitment and passion for student success.
Lindzy Davis has been named the MCPS Elementary School Counselor of the Year. According to MCPS, Davis began her career in Baltimore City, where she discovered a passion for building relationships with students and removing obstacles to their success. After joining MCPS in 2018 at Earle B. Wood Middle School as a long-term substitute, she secured a permanent role at Georgian Forest Elementary School before arriving at Flower Hill in 2022.
Earlier this week, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) shared that beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, there will be revisions to grading and reporting at the secondary level. Student Member of the Board of Education, Praneel Suvarna, has shared that he is disappointed with the new regulations.
The Montgomery County Schools Automotive Trades Foundation recently hosted a DriveSmart safety program at Edison High School in Silver Spring, where over 100 Montgomery County Public Schools automotive students used virtual reality and driving simulators to experience the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has sent a reminder that beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, there will be revisions to grading and reporting at the secondary level. This will include an update to the calculation of final grades for students in grades 6 through 12 and the school system says that the changes are designed to increase consistency, and strengthen expectations for student learning and accountability across schools (video below).
