The Montgomery County Board of Education approved the following administrative appointments on Thursday, July 18th.
An additional thirteen Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have earned college- and university-sponsored National Merit Scholarships in the final round of awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
The Montgomery County Board of Education invites applications for a vacant position on its five-member Ethics Panel (Panel). The vacancy is for a term running through June 30, 2027. Members serve without compensation.
The Montgomery County Board of Education will hold a business meeting Thursday, July 18 at 15 W Gude Drive, Rockville. The meeting will be cablecast live on Comcast Channel 34 (HD 1071), Verizon Channel 36, RCN Channel 89 and the MCPS website. The agenda can be seen below:
Last week, we reported that The University of Maryland College of Education had named former MCPS superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight as its inaugural Dean’s Fellow and Superintendent in Residence, effective August 23. According to the University of Maryland, the new position has been created “to help strengthen partnerships between the college and PK-12 schools across the state.” (more…)
Last week, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order to establish cell phone-free schools in Virginia’s K-12 public schools. The order aims to ban or severely restrict the use of cell phones during the school day citing “increasing evidence of the impact cell phone and social media usage has on education and youth mental health.” Since then, we’ve spoken with various MCPS teachers and parents who have chimed in to provide different perspectives on the topic.

Rising seniors Abby Sorkin and Emily Sefcik from Sherwood High School started the “Sports for All Club” during their junior year. They collected donations of new or gently used sports equipment at their school and donated it to kids from under-resourced communities.
