The Montgomery County Board of Education will hold a business meeting Thursday, May 23. This will be the first meeting at the Board’s new location, 15 W Gude Drive, Rockville. Megan Lee of Watkins Mill High School and Kairo Maysonet Walker of Julius West Middle School were the top winners in their respective categories in this year’s “Keeping it Safe Coalition” student video contest sponsored by Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) and the Montgomery County Police Department. The annual contest encourages student teams to create 30-second public service announcements about the risks of under-21 alcohol use.
The Hispanic Alliance for Education held its annual Distinguished Hispanic Scholars Awards ceremony on May 9. Twenty-eight students were honored for outstanding academic achievement, community engagement and leadership.
Nearly 300 MCPS seniors were recognized for their accomplishment in completing the Dual Enrollment program with Montgomery College at the Dual Enrollment ceremony on Wednesday, May 15.

Most people dread seeing their teachers outside of school, but one Watkins Mill High School alumna is looking forward to it this weekend. WMHS graduate Kathryn Bratt-Pfotenhauer will speak as a featured poetry author and in the following block WMHS english and journalism teacher Sara Goodman Confino will be one of the featured authors at the Gaithersburg Book Festival for the second time. Confino will be engaging in a discussion about her book, Don’t Forget to Write, with Sophie Wan, the author of Women of Good Fortune.
