Joint Initiative with USG Also Aims to Build Awareness of Waste-to-Energy Benefits
With a new academic year underway, the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) and Covanta, a leader in sustainable waste management and operator of the Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility, are proud to jointly announce a new scholarship program that can benefit students who are enrolled in an array of academic programs offered by USG’s nine partner universities.
Walter Johnson (3-0) at Paint Branch (2-1): WJ has taken big steps over the last 4 years and this is a great opportunity for the Wildcats to prove themselves and stake a claim for the top seed in the 4A North. Blake (3-0) at Sherwood (3-0): Congratulations to the Bengals on starting 3-0 for the first time ever! It was a bit expected given the level of competition they’ve played so far, but also a testament to their growth under Coach Marshall. Sherwood will be a big step up for the Bengals, but this should be a good one – Blake tends to play the Warriors tough, and nearly pulled off the comeback upset last year, only to fall on a walk-off Hail Mary. However, Sherwood has exceeded expectations so far this year and based on their performances along with Blake’s not particularly impressive win over Einstein, think they show the Bengals that there’s still a ways to climb. Stone Mill Elementary School has been selected a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). The winners were announced on Sept. 19.
Per the MCPS press release: Stone Mill is the 43rd MCPS school to be named a National Blue Ribbon winner. The school was among 313 public and 40 private schools being recognized this year. It is one of six schools in Maryland to win the honor. The others are: Church Hill Elementary School and Matapeake Elementary School in Queen Anne’s County, Northeast Elementary School in Allegany County, Oakdale High School in Frederick County and Smithsburg Middle School in Washington County.
Per MCPS: The National Hispanic College Fair will be held on Friday, Oct. 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bohrer Park Community Center in Gaithersburg. This annual event sponsored by the National Hispanic College Fair and MCPS for all students is FREE. The fair features over 50 colleges, universities and service organizations committed to providing outreach and opportunities to all students.
MCPS students participate by attending with their schools; this event is not open to the public and is held during the school day. Registration is open until Wednesday, Oct. 11 and permission forms for this event can be found by contacting your High School College and Career Information Coordinator.
Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Recreation, in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools Out of School Time (OST), will offer out-of-school programming for students throughout the 2023-24 school year. Kids Day Out, for elementary school students, is a day filled with fun, supervised activities, planned with an emphasis on kid-friendly, healthy recreation. Programs will take place at various locations across the County beginning Monday, Oct. 9. Locations include:

1. (LW 1) Quince Orchard 3-0: The Cougars needed a last second comeback to defeat Stone Bridge, VA 29-22 in a highly entertaining game. Quarterback Nino Marzullo had 187 total yards and 2 touchdowns in the victory. Up next a road trip to Potomac to take on Churchill in the MoCoShow Game of the Week!
2. (LW 2) Northwest 3-0: The Jaguars defeated Richard Montgomery 52-29. As a team, Northwest ran for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns. This Friday, the Jags travel down the road to take on Germantown rival Seneca Valley in the Battle for the King’s Trophy.

Montgomery College (MC) was honored this week as a 2023-2026 FamilyU Seal recipient and the “Exemplar” institution by Generation Hope. In its first year, the FamilyU Seal recognizes higher education institutions and nonprofit organizations that have made significant strides in supporting student parents. One of 13 higher education institutions chosen from a competitive field of candidates, MC was also selected as the group’s exemplary institution, which means the College will receive $25,000 to continue advancing its student parent work.
With an estimated 15% of MC students parenting while they study, the College is committed to helping support their journey to successful completion and post-completion success. This national certification celebrates their outstanding efforts in serving parenting students and achieving outcomes for student parents across the country.
This year represents the 40th anniversary of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Congratulations to the more than 9,000 awardees recognized since 1983. Six schools in Maryland (one in Montgomery County) have been recognized in 2023– they are listed below.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS) Program is one of the U.S. Department of Education’s longest-running recognition programs. NBRS recognizes outstanding public and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall high academic achievement or success in closing the achievement gap among diverse groups of students. Since its inception, the goals of the program are to shine a spotlight on the best schools in the United States and to share best practices of outstanding schools across the country.
