Two weeks into the season, the picture in Montgomery County volleyball is starting to heat up. Magruder, Quince Orchard, and Sherwood all remain undefeated at 5-0, proving their early-season dominance. Wootton (5-1), Bethesda-Chevy Chase (4-1), and Richard Montgomery (4-1) continue to keep pace as the first chasers in a crowded top tier.
By any measure, this was supposed to be a slugfest… Maryland’s highest ranked public school football team against Virginia’s highest ranked public school football team. Quince Orchard’s latest renewal of its budding interstate rivalry with Stone Bridge (VA) had all the makings of another nail-biter, two perennial powers, both with hard-nosed reputations, clashing in late September. But when the final horn sounded at the Cougar Dome, it was clear there was only one bully left standing.
On Friday night, Montgomery County Police responded to Blake High School in Silver Spring after the Springbrook–Blake football game, dispersing a crowd following reports of a fight. Police emphasized that no arrests were made and no shots were fired despite social media rumors. In a letter obtained first by Moderately Moco, the principals of Blake, Springbrook, and Paint Branch high schools confirmed that multiple student fights occurred, one involving all three schools, and noted that an MCPD officer used non-lethal pepper-ball rounds to help clear the scene, with disciplinary actions expected against those involved. In a battle between two Montgomery County powerhouses, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons stunned the Churchill Bulldogs with a commanding 3–1 win on Wednesday night. The Barons took sets one, three, and four (25–17, 26–24, 25–22), while the Bulldogs claimed set two (25–19).
Montgomery County currently has 25 public high schools, with two new additions, Crown High School in Gaithersburg and the reopened Woodward High School in North Bethesda, set to join the list in the coming years. While the county has experienced significant growth and modernization, several of its schools trace their roots back well over a century. Here’s a closer look at the three oldest high schools in Montgomery County Public Schools (that still exist in MCPS):
