On Wednesday afternoon, shortly after 3 pm, Wootton High School was alerted to police activity along Wootton Parkway in Rockville following an alleged threat by a current and former student to harm the school. The police detained the involved individuals, and as a precaution, the school transitioned to a shelter-in-place– bringing athletes inside from the fields until an update was received from Montgomery County Police.
On March 31, Twinbrook Elementary School became a hub of community spirit as parents, students, neighbors, and local organizations gathered for Community Care Day. The day’s activities– from tree planting and landscaping to constructing benches, mulching, and improving storm drains– transformed the school’s outdoor space into a welcoming environment for learning and growth. MCPS is hosting public information meetings on boundary studies for the reopening of Charles W. Woodward High School, the opening of Crown High School and the expansion of Damascus High School. These sessions will provide important details on the boundary study scope, process and opportunities for future engagement.
C-SPAN has announced the 2025 winners of its 21st annual StudentCam competition, recognizing students from Silver Spring, Bethesda, Potomac, Germantown, Rockville, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Dermott Foley of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring won the grand prize for his documentary on fentanyl overdose, while other students received second, third, and honorable mention prizes for topics such as affordable housing, climate change, and healthcare policies. Every two years, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conference unites the European Music Educators Association with top student musicians from the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions—including the District of Columbia. This time around, twelve MCPS students were selected.
The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a news release stating that it welcomed Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) response to a complaint regarding the alleged mistreatment of an 8-year-old Muslim student at Cabin Branch Elementary School in Clarksburg, which included removing the teacher from the classroom.
