Last week, we reported that The University of Maryland College of Education had named former MCPS superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight as its inaugural Dean’s Fellow and Superintendent in Residence, effective August 23. Last week, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order to establish cell phone-free schools in Virginia’s K-12 public schools. The order aims to ban or severely restrict the use of cell phones during the school day citing “increasing evidence of the impact cell phone and social media usage has on education and youth mental health.” Since then, we’ve spoken with various MCPS teachers and parents who have chimed in to provide different perspectives on the topic.

Rising seniors Abby Sorkin and Emily Sefcik from Sherwood High School started the “Sports for All Club” during their junior year. They collected donations of new or gently used sports equipment at their school and donated it to kids from under-resourced communities.
