Wootton’s Mack Hollins is in the Midst of His Best NFL Season

Montgomery County native Mack Hollins caught 8 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Las Vegas Raiders in his week 3 breakout game that solidified him as a starting wide receiver. Though he is already a Super Bowl champion, he currently has 36 catches for 468 yards and 2 touchdowns in what has become his best NFL season out of five in the league. He was voted a captain prior to the start of the season.

Hollins attended Robert Frost Middle School and Wootton High School. After not receiving any scholarship offers out of high school, Hollins attended Fork Union Military Academy where he received several offers to join teams, including a walk-on opportunity on the University of North Carolina football team if he could get accepted to the university on his own. Hollins got accepted and was able to walk-on, playing three seasons for the Tarheels before getting drafted by the Eagles in the 4th round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Sports Junkies Sign New Four-Year Deal With 106.7; Three of the Four are MoCo Residents

Maryland-natives John Auville (Cakes), Eric Bickel (EB), Jason Bishop (Lurch/Bish) and John-Paul Flaim (JP) will remain on WJFK-FM (106.7 The Fan) Washington, DC, weekdays from 5-10am for at least another four years, the group announced last week.

Auville, Bickel, and Flaim grew up as friends in Bowie, Maryland. Bishop and Bickel became friends when they both attended DeMatha in high school. The longtime friends have worked together on the show since 1995 when the group began with a 30-minute public access television show in Bowie, before moving to radio. Auville, Bickel, and Flaim are all currently residents of Montgomery County, with Bishop living in Virginia.

Essay, Poetry Contests Now Open for High School Students

Two writing contests are now open for submissions—the Gaithersburg Book Festival’s poetry contest and Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE). The 2023 Gaithersburg Book Festival’s annual high school poetry contest is now open for submissions. This year’s theme is “Diversity or Inclusion.” To participate, students must be enrolled in grades 9-12. The deadline is midnight on Thursday, Feb. 23. First, second and third place winners will receive $250, $100 and $50 gift certificates, respectively.

Partners for Automated Vehicle Education’s (PAVE’s) essay contest encourages high school juniors and seniors to contemplate a future with automated vehicles, and to write about what this could mean for their communities. Learn more on the PAVE essay contest website. Submissions are due Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.The first place winner will receive $2,500; second place, $1,500 and third place, $1,000.

Brookside Gardens’ Garden of Lights Display Opens Friday, November 18

Montgomery Parks announces the opening of this year’s Brookside Gardens’ annual Garden of Lights outdoor, walk-through winter light display on Friday, November 18 (preview photos and video available below). Garden of Lights features glimmering one-of-a-kind displays adorning the flowerbeds and pathways throughout Brookside Gardens. New features this year include a winter wonderland scene with tall ice-like formations and falling snow in the Rose Garden and oversized colorful flower forms throughout the Formal Gardens. All new displays were handcrafted by Montgomery Parks staff

Pedestrians and cyclists can enter the seasonal light display at the pedestrian gate at 1800 Glenallan Avenue or via a half-mile path beginning at 2000 Shorefield Road, near the Wheaton Regional Park Adventure Playground.Visitors can buy unique, seasonal gifts at the gift shop and hot chocolate and snacks will also be available for purchase.

Independent Film Night to be Hosted by Gaithersburg Arts Barn on Saturday, Nov. 19

Per Montgomery County: Seven featured films will be screened on Saturday, Nov. 19, as the Gaithersburg Arts Barn hosts its Independent Film Night. The screenings will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a question and answer session with the films’ creators following each. The Arts Barn is located at 311 Kent Square Rd. in Gaithersburg. Admission for the evening is $15. Tickets can be purchased here. The film night is recommended for ages 13 and older. Concessions will be sold before the film screenings and during intermission

Four MCPS Students Selected to Play in All-National Honors Bands and Orchestras

Four MCPS students from two different schools have been selected to play in All-National Honor Bands and Orchestras.

Thomas S. Wootton High School sophomore Sara Bock, who plays clarinet, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School sophomore Shisui Torii, who plays French horn, were selected to be in the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME’s) All-National Honor Band. Wootton sophomores Jackson Bernal, who plays bassoon, and Anderson Bernal, who plays double bass, were selected to the All-National Honor Orchestra.

Holiday Art Market in Gaithersburg From November 25-January 8

This year’s exhibit features more than 1,200 unique, handmade items by members of the Gaithersburg Artist Collective, many perfect for the season’s gift giving. Items include paintings, prints, cards, ceramics, photography, jewelry, art glass, turned wood, mixed media & much more.

Artists on Market is pop-up gallery & studio space where visitors may shop for unique art and handcrafts from 27 juried collective members – all local artists – recognized for their talent in painting, collage, fiber, ceramics, jewelry, photography, glass, sculpture & more. The mission of the Gaithersburg Artist Collective, which runs Artists on Market, is to bring the visual arts to the community through not only the pop-up gallery, but also by providing events & educational opportunities for all ages, year-round. Black Panther Costume Worn by the Late Chadwick Boseman is Coming to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture

Per the National Museum of African American History & Culture: Black Panther’s hero costume is coming to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture! The museum acquired several objects from the record-breaking film Black Panther, including the hero costume worn by actor Chadwick Boseman; a shooting script signed by Ryan Coogler (co-writer; director), Kevin Feige (producer, president of Marvel Studios), Nate Moore (executive producer) and Joe Robert Cole (co-writer; producer); two pages of spec script; and 24 high-resolution production photographs.

Black Panther is the first superhero of African descent to appear in mainstream American comics, and the film itself is the first major cinematic production based on the character. Black Panther illustrates the progression of blacks in film, an industry that in the past has overlooked blacks, or regulated them to flat, one-dimensional and marginalized figures. The film, like the museum, provides a fuller story of black culture and identity.

WWE Superstar, Omos, Surprises His Family in Nigeria for the First Time in 14 Years (He Moved to the United States in 2008 to Attend High School in MoCo)

WWE Superstar Omos came off one of the biggest matches of his career at WWE’s pay per view “Crown Jewel” event in Saudi Arabia. Though he didn’t come away victorious, he did get to visit his family in Nigeria for the first time since moving to the United States to attend school and play basketball at Montrose Christian in Rockville back in 2008.

The 7’3, 335 Nigerian-born Jordan Omogbehin moved to America with his family and attended school/played basketball at Montrose Christian (photo below) for the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school years. He went on to attend and play for the University of South Florida before moving back to Maryland and attending/playing for Morgan State University. His college basketball career spanned from 2012 to 2015. Omogbehin signed with WWE in October 2018, and made his in-ring debut a couple years back at WrestleMania 37 in Tampa, FL. From the time he initially came to the United States, he hasn’t been able to make it back to visit his family until last week. The video, seen below and courtesy of TMZ Sports, is certainly a feel-good moment.

Mario Lopez to Host In-Person ‘Home for the Holidays’ Kickoff Concert at Montgomery Mall on November 20

“Saved by the Bell’s” Mario Lopez will be appearing at Westfield Montgomery Mall on Sunday, November 20 to host a holiday concert to benefit Children’s National Hospital. The event is open to the public, but RSVPs are encouraged and will enter guests in to win a meet and greet with Mario Lopez. Funds donated at the event will directly benefit activities and memorable moments for childhood-aged patients residing at the hospital. Westfield Montgomery will match donations made for this event and throughout other activities for the Holiday season, up to $10,000. Click here to RSVP.
