On Thursday, March 2 at 7:30 pm the City of Takoma Park will offer a vintage movie night that will feature films on World War II. The event will take place at the Takoma Park Community Center, located at 7500 Maple Avenue. Additional information below, courtesy of the City of Takoma Park:

“As we witness the ongoing horror of the war in Ukraine, independent filmmaker Richard Hall will share a variety of vintage anti-war films which draw parallels between the conflict in Ukraine and the Vietnam War and highlight ongoing efforts to promote peace and equality.


Explore chemistry, rockets, robots, reptiles and more on Sunday, April 23 at the 32nd annual Rockville Science Day. This Rockville tradition returns to Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee St., from noon-5 p.m. The free event offers an opportunity to experience hands-on science- and technology-related exhibits, activities, games, and demonstrations from over 70 local organizations and businesses. Admission is free.

Activities and exhibits include building and launching rockets, telescopes, robots and backyard wildlife, microscopes, snakes, stream science, Civil War medical practice, coding challenges, math puzzles, chemistry in action, electric vehicles, quadcopters, archaeology mini-digs, 3-D printing, brain games, and more.


In partnership with Montgomery Goes Purple, MCPS is hosting a second Family Forum on Fentanyl from 9:30–11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Northwood High School auditorium. A representative from the Montgomery County Police Department talks with parents during the first forum on fentanyl at Clarksburg High School in January.

Panelists, including representatives from the county health department and the police department, will share information on the dangers and prevalence of illegally made fentanyl, prevention tools and protective factors for students, and resources for treatment. There will be Narcan training and distribution of Narcan kits to help reverse an overdose, breakout discussions for students and parents/caregivers (in English and Spanish) and a resource fair. The Community Opioid Prevention & Education (C.O.P.E.) trailer (a mock teen bedroom) will be available for tours to learn signs of substance use. Students can earn two Student Service Learning hours for attending.


SpringFest is a Poolesville Town celebration, featuring BBQ, Beer & Blues. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 6th from 2pm-7pm, and will “have something for everyone”, including musical performances by the Hard Swimmin’ Fish (2-4 pm) and New Blue Soul (5-7 pm), food and artisan vendors, and kids activities such as face-painting, rock wall, mechanical bull, bounce house and dunk tank.

The Beer & Wine tent will feature samples from over 20 local breweries. A ticket is required to sample the beer & wine and pre-sale tickets are available now. Tickets are not needed to enjoy all of the other amazing festivities throughout the day. Forging Freedom: Endurance, Escape, and Rockville’s Underground Railroad is an exhibit on the story of Rockville in the era of the Underground Railroad, when slavery cast a shadow over life in this farming town, and separatist tensions steadily propelled the nation towards war. Come learn about the brave fugitives who fled slavery in Rockville, the abolitionist network that helped, and the endurance of the enslaved community.

The Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence, the NAACP Parents’ Council and Identity, Inc. are hosting a virtual conversation with MCPS Superintendent Monifa McKnight on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The event will take place via Zoom from 6:30–8 p.m.

The event will provide an opportunity for families to ask questions on topics, including how well students are doing in school; the anti-racist audit and equity, and student well-being. The session will take place on February 22, 2023, and look at the rise of public art as a form of expression, healing and protest in America. 

Montgomery Parks is hosting its February virtual speaker series on the topic of public art on Thursday, February 22, 2023, from 3-4 p.m. This session features art expert Jack Becker discussing how public art can act as a cultural barometer, revealing a society’s values and struggles.


Town hall will be held at Lakelands Park Middle School in Gaithersburg with virtual participation available

The Montgomery County Council will hold a hybrid town hall meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Lakelands Park Middle School, which is located at 1200 Main St. in Gaithersburg.  Councilmembers have scheduled this time to answer questions and listen to concerns from community members. Some of the topics for discussion will include public safety, public health, housing and transportation, and other issues of community concern.
