Ticket Sales for Brookside Gardens’ Garden of Lights Display Begin at 9am on October 11

Montgomery Parks will begin selling tickets for Brookside Gardens’ annual Garden of Lights outdoor, walk-through winter light display on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022. Tickets are available on Eventbrite starting October 11 at 9 am (video of the display available below).

Garden of Lights features glimmering one-of-a-kind displays adorning the flowerbeds and pathways throughout Brookside Gardens. New features this year include a winter wonderland scene with tall ice-like formations and falling snow in the Rose Garden and oversized colorful flower forms throughout the formal gardens. All new displays were handcrafted by Montgomery Parks staff.

Road Closures Begin at 6am in Gaithersburg for Sunday, October 9th Oktoberfest Event

Per Gaithersburg Police: On Sunday, October 9, the City of Gaithersburg Government 29th Annual Oktoberfest will be held in the Kentlands. Please plan your travels accordingly. Starting at 6:00 am, City streets will be closed and they will reopen at approximately 9:00 pm. The following streets will be affected:

Montgomery Parks Announces Halloween Special Events and Programs

Montgomery Parks  announces a spooky lineup of events to celebrate Halloween this October with offerings for all ages. Halloween events in Montgomery Parks include: 

Board the miniature Halloween Eye Spy Trains at Cabin John and Wheaton Regional Parks to ride through “Transylvania.” Riders receive an “Eye Spy” card with seasonal items to find along the tracks during the ride. Advance ticket purchase through ActiveMontgomeryis recommended to guarantee a seat. A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the venues. All ages (ticket required for ages 2 and older). $6- $8.

Bethesda Row Arts Festival Takes Place October 8 and 9

The 24th Bethesda Row Arts Festival, one of the Washington, DC area’s premier outdoor fine arts festivals, will take place on Saturday, October 8th (11am-6pm) and Sunday, October 9th (10am-5pm) at Bethesda Row (directions available below).

Over 165 artists from around the country will showcase their work across four blocks — including painting, drawing, jewelry, photography, sculpture, fabric, glass, ceramics, wood, and many other mediums. The event is free to attend, and family-friendly.

New this year, pedestrians and cyclists can enter the seasonal light display at the pedestrian gate at 1800 Glenallan Ave. or via a half-mile path beginning at 2000 Shorefield Road near the Wheaton Regional Park Adventure Playground.

Are you shivering with anticipation? We are screening “Rocky Horror Picture Show(opens in a new tab)” this Friday, October 7, 6 pm, at Northwest Branch Recreational Park. Free admission and free prop bags to first 100 participants. Costumes encouraged. Recommended for mature audiences seventeen and older. Carpooling encouraged. Park Police will be onsite for traffic control. Neighbors encouraged to walk to event.

The Poolesville Ghost Tour 2022, Presented by Historic Deadly District

Professor and folklore enthusiast Christine Rai will lead a hair-raising outdoor walking tour through the center of Poolesville, and tell the tales of dark histories and chilling hauntings associated with some of our oldest historic buildings. This walking ghost tour throughout Downtown Poolesville will take participants for an approximate 1 mile walk, standing for the duration of the tour.

Early tours (6:00 – 7:00 pm) are family-friendly, and end back at the John Poole House, where a bonfire and hot cider will be waiting. Later tours (8:00 – 9:15 pm) are even spookier and also end with a bonfire and cider at the John Poole House. These tours are for adults and children ages 15 and up. Tickets must be purchased in advance and go for $10 for children 5-11 and $20 for adults (children under 5 are free). The ghost tours have sold out in the past, so make sure to get a ticket while you can! Space is limited. All ticket sales support the preservation efforts and educational programs of Historic Medley District.

“Leech Woods” Haunted Trail Opens in Damascus

Leech Woods, a brand new haunted trail, is now open at 11201 Bethesda Church Rd in Damascus. It’s described as “a thirty minute immersive haunted trail experience of dark terror” that promises a night of chain saws, clowns and dark corners. Leech Woods also offers food and drink, four bonfires, axe throwing, a DJ booth, fortune telling, and other forms of entertainment each night.

Per Leech Woods: According to Montgomery County historical land records, the present site of Leech Woods was originally settled by Warwick and Jeanne Leech and their six children sometime in early 1790. Having immigrated from Hungary, the family chose Damascus, Maryland based on its temperate climate and heavily wooded region which reminded them of their homeland. The Leech family store thrived as the leading local merchant of hides, furs and hunting supplies. During the disastrous Winter of 1804, the Leech family store was robbed and vandalized by unknown attackers and the body of John Leech, the youngest son, was found nailed to the back wall of the store. The remaining bodies of the family members were later found bludgeoned and bound inside of the root cellar of their homestead. No further information about the attackers or motives for the killings are known.

Montgomery Parks presents “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

Montgomery Parks will host a screening of the 1970s camp cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Northwest Branch Recreational Park from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

“Montgomery Parks is excited to be bringing the screening for all Rocky generations to enjoy. This will be a fun and memorable introduction to the phenomenon that is Rocky Horror for those that have yet to experience it,” said Jordan Crumback, Parks activation specialist. The audience can begin arriving at 6 p.m. with blankets and chairs to get a spot on the lawn. Food and beer concessions will be available for purchase from Liquidity Aleworks, Catalyst Hot Dogs and O’Boy Pizza & Ice Cream before and during the show.

Takoma Park Street Festival Cancelled (Sunday, 10/2)

The Takoma Park Street Festival scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd has been cancelled “due to the forecast associated with Hurricane Ian”, per Ron Hardy, the acting public information officer for Takoma Park Police.

This would have been the 41st year in Takoma Park for the event, with music, artists and makers, community groups, green companies and great food originally scheduled for what would have been from 10am until 5pm at Carroll Avenue.
