Multiple Officers Assaulted in Gaithersburg; Two Hospitalized With Serious Injuries

According to Montgomery County Police, “At approximately 8:03 p.m., MCP officers responded to an apartment building in the 7900 block of Spiceberry Cir in Gaithersburg for the report of an individual spraying a fire extinguisher in the hallway. 

Officers arrived at the scene and spoke with a victim who advised that the same individual had broken into his/her apartment. Officers searched for the suspect and located him in the area of Washington Grove Lane and Mineral Springs Drive, where the suspect assaulted officers. The suspect then fled to the McDonald’s located at 18273 Flower Hill Way and assaulted more officers.

Watkins Mill Principal Carol Goddard Retires After Almost 50 Years in Education

Watkins Mill High School principal Carol Goddard has completed the 2022-23 school year– officially retiring after spending almost 50 years working in education and 30 years in Montgomery County Public Schools. Goddard’s retirement comes with mixed emotions for the community, including herself.  “I love this place.  Love the kids.  Love what I do,” Goddard said.  She will miss the kids and staff, and “all the tight, tight friendships I’ve made in the professional world.” “I am happy for Ms. Goddard to retire,” social studies teacher Lauren Squier said.  “I’m sure it was a very difficult choice for her to ‘hang up her pencils,’ but I’m excited for her to enjoy a new chapter in her life.”

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for New 6th District Police Station in Gaithersburg

Per Montgomery County:

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Evan Glass joined the ceremonies on June 29 as the County broke ground on a new 6th District Police Station at 222 Paramount Park Drive in Gaithersburg. Serving the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities, the new 6th District Police Station will replace an outdated facility with a new, sustainably designed energy-efficient building scheduled to open in spring 2025.

Laytonsville Independence Day Celebration With View of Fireworks on July 3rd

The Family Room Laytonsville will be hosting “The Fourth at the Family Room”’on Monday, July 3rd. Nearby Montgomery Country Club will be setting off their fireworks on Monday, July 3rd and the display can be seen from the parking lot of The Family Room (6820 Olney Laytonsville Rd), featuring “The Best Burger in the DMV” Steeze Burger.

The fireworks display begins at 9:15pm, but it is advised to arrive early to secure your spot. Per The Family Room: “We will be open late on July 3rd for ice cream, Steezeburgers and local fireworks. @steeze.burger will be serving burgers starting at 5p until they sellout! 🍔 We will also have live music from local artist @katekeeleymusic starting at 6:30p! Grab dinner, dessert and enjoy live music and fireworks with us at The Family Room!” Additional events across the county that include fireworks can be seen here.

Gaithersburg Celebrates “Where Community Grows”

The City of Gaithersburg celebrates Parks & Recreation Month throughout the month of July with special events, programs and classes. SummerFest on July 1, SportsFest on July 15, and the Explore Gaithersburg! Park Passport program are just a few highlights of the month-long celebration.

The Mayor & City Council will proclaim July as “Parks and Recreation Month” in the City of Gaithersburg at its meeting on July 3. The proclamation reminds Gaithersburg residents of the importance of parks and recreation facilities, programs, staff, and volunteers while encouraging everyone to embrace active lifestyles and improve their overall health.

Major Traffic Advisory in Gaithersburg on Saturday, July 1st

This Saturday, July 1 is the City of Gaithersburg Government SummerFest event at Bohrer Park. Please note that starting at 5PM, there will be lane reductions along South Frederick Avenue (Route 355) adjacent to Bohrer Park and there will be a change in traffic patterns for the event.

Vehicles will not be allowed to cross over or turn left onto South Frederick Avenue (Route 355) between Cedar and Central Avenues. Plan your route accordingly. If you are not attending the festival, please take alternate routes to avoid the area completely.

MoCo’s Newest Chick-fil-a is Owned/Operated by Gaithersburg High School Alumnus

Montgomery County’s newest Chick-fil-a has officially opened for business at 700 N. Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg. Chick-fil-a’s first Montgomery County restaurant opened less than a mile away from its newest location, opening inside of  Lakeforest Mall in 2003. That location closed in late 2011, a few months before the Kentlands location in Gaithersburg opened. Richard Munguia, a graduate of nearby Gaithersburg High School, is the owner/operator of the new restaurant.

Upon walking inside, you’ll see a photo of Richard. His time with the company started at the Tech Rd location in Silver Spring. He moved on to helping open Chick-fil-a restaurants across the country before returning to open a location in the area he grew up in. Per the sign up front, from Richard:  “It’s my full-time job-and really my passion- to make sure your visit is always a great one. While I am part of a large organization, as an Owner-Operator, I’m actually an individual business partner of Chick-fil-A, This brings not only responsibility and accountability, which is good for Guests and our Team Members alike, it also allows me to bring a local flavor to the Restaurant.

Inferno Pizzeria Ranked 23rd in “Top 50 Pizzerias in the USA” List

50 Top Pizza, a pizza evaluation site in Paestum, Italy, not far from Naples, has released its 2023 Top 50 Pizza list. Montgomery County contributed with the 23rd ranked pizzeria in the country– Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana, located in Darnestown/Gaithersburg. Last year Inferno was ranked 25th on the list.

Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana has been open in Gaithersburg (12207 Darnestown Rd.) for nearly 7.5 years– there is still a line into the parking lot full of eager diners hoping to get a table before the dough ran out for the night– something that’s a common occurrence for Inferno (see our video below). For those unfamiliar with the restaurant, it was opened by Chef Tony Conte in October 2015 after he spent nine years in DC’s Oval Room. Inferno specializes in pizza, but regulars will tell you that the appetizers are often just as much of a draw.

Police Investigating Home Invasion Armed Robbery in Montgomery Village

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Monday, June 26, 2023, in the 20200 block of Maple Leaf Court. Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.

The initial investigation has revealed that at approximately 11:35 p.m., an unknown suspect entered the victim’s residence. The suspect displayed a black handgun with an extended magazine and demanded personal property from the victim in that room. The suspect then went upstairs and demanded cash from another victim in the residence. The suspect then left the residence on foot in an unknown direction.
