Gaithersburg Man Arrested For Phishing Theft of $375K

Per Seymour, Connecticut Police: On February 1, 2023, following a lengthy and complex investigation by the Seymour Police Department Detective Bureau with assistance from the Gaithersburg Police Department in Maryland, Officers from both Departments arrested the following individual, Charles Ukasanya, for his role in the theft of approximately $375,000 in funds from the Town of Seymour.

Mr. Ukasanya was charged with one count of Larceny in the 1 degree which is a Class B felony. He was taken into custody in Maryland on an extraditable warrant issued by a judge in Milford Superior Court, CT. The court set bond on this warrant is $60,000. Mr. Ukasanya is in custody in Maryland, and will be extradited to Connecticut for prosecution. This investigation into the theft of funds is still active and ongoing at this time.

Asian Cuisine and Seafood Coming to Gaithersburg

Signage is up for Asian Cuisine and Seafood at 8035 Snouffer School Rd in Gaithersburg, the former site of China King. No additional details about the restaurant are available but construction is currently ongoing in the interior of the building. Asian Cuisine and Seafood will be located between 7-Eleven and El Salvadoran restaurant El Encanto.

China King closed this past June after over 20 years in business. The owners told us that difficulty staffing and pandemic woes helped them to decide it was time to retire. China King was known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and for using high quality fresh ingredients.

Art League of Germantown Celebrates 10th Annual Juried Exhibition

Arts on the Green in presents the 10th Annual Juried Membership Exhibition of the Art League of Germantown (ALOG). The exhibit is on display through April 16, 2023 At the Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg.

As part of this special exhibition, a multidiscipline workshop, Blooms & Beyond: Beginner’s Guide to Paper Flowers, will be held on Saturday, February 4 from 10:30 am to noon. Bill Mapes, ALOG’s Special Show Coordinator & Jaree Donnelly, the City’s Gallery Program Coordinator & a long-time art instructor, will share their insights about some of their favorite floral pieces from the exhibition. Jaree will share basic techniques on how to bring art to life with an introductory paper flowers craft class. All materials to create a card featuring paper flowers is included.

MCPS SMOB Nominating Convention to Be Held on February 15

The Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) Nominating Convention will be held on February 15, 2023 at Watkins Mill High School. Delegates from across Montgomery County Public Schools middle and high schools will convene to elect the two finalists for SMOB. The current candidates for the 46th SMOB are as follows:

The two finalists elected at the SMOB Nominating Convention will move forward to the SMOB election to be held on April 19, 2023.

Below we’ve created a list of five recently opened restaurants across Montgomery County that have created the most buzz on our social media accounts and website. Grandma’s Ice Cream and Waffles (Rockville): Grandma’s Ice Cream and Waffles at 389 E. Gude Dr in Rockville, next to the former Branded 72/O’Brien’s restaurant space, opened last month. Grandma’s is owned and operated by the same owners as “Grandma Kona’s” Kona Ice franchise in Gaithersburg/Germantown and offers liege waffle sandwiches with a variety of options including vegan and “soft serve ice cream with unbelievable flavor (including dairy free options) with Grandma’s twist of injecting flavor into the ice cream and if wanted dipped in chocolate or caramel.”

MoCo Native Kevin Saunders Excels in Recent Roles on Major Shows

Actor Kevin Saunders grew up in Gaithersburg, attending Whetstone and Stedwick elementary schools in Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village. At 13, he moved to Western Maryland but came back to Gaithersburg when he was 20, later attending the University of Maryland at College Park. Now, his acting career is picking up steam– coming off of an appearance on the hit STARZ series BMF. In recent years he has had roles in Atlanta, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Cobra Kai, and a lot more.

When asked about his favorite role, Saunders said, “This one is a tough one to be honest, so if I can answer this as a 2 parter. My first was Falcon and the Winter Soldier. That role was honestly a gift from God. I auditioned for the show June of 2019 for a completely different part and didn’t get it. Well in the thick of 2020, my agent calls me and say casting wants me to be sent to producers for one of the parts and the rest is history. The episode aired the day after my birthday while I was back home which made everything so surreal. Leaving my job and family to pursue my dream to now being in the MCU! My second was my role in Atlanta. I told myself as I was moving down that I was going to be on that show. I loved it, understood the comedy and wanted to be apart of the masterpiece. After switching agents I got my first and only audition for the role and I booked it. I got to improv a lot of moments in that scene with LaKeith Stanfield and we had GREAT convos about leaving our mark in this business as minority actors. Not only was my time on set as an actor amazing, but being a director/writer myself, they allowed me to stay behind and watch Hiro Murai’s process as a director and he was so welcoming to have me there.”

MCFRS Respond to Vehicle Fire in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a vehicle fire in Gaithersburg on Friday morning. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire occurred around 10:25am in the Quince Orchard Plaza shopping center, which is in the 600 block of Quince Orchard Rd, near Clopper Rd. The fire has been extinguished and there are no injuries reported. Quince Orchard Plaza is home to the recently opened Taco Bamba, Staples, Shadow Land Laster Tag, and Quincy’s. Detectives Investigate Montgomery Village Avenue Pedestrian Fatality; Identity of Victim Released

Call to Artists For Paid Public Art Program

It is strongly recommend applicants read through the entire application and prepare all files, including renaming file names to the correct format, and drafting descriptions, statements and other information in advance to make the process more efficient.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The Gaithersburg Cultural Arts Advisory Committee (CAAC) seeks to promote artistic expression within our community, creative excellence from artists of all media, and incorporate artwork into the built and natural environment. It is with this dedication that the CAAC invites artists to submit their qualifications to be considered for public art projects within our Art in Public Places Program (AIPP). Artists will need to have experience creating public artworks, working with the community on public art projects, and ideally, as part of public art projects with adults and/or youth applicants should have arts education experience. The committee is interested in different types of media and approaches to art, including sculpture, murals, environmental artwork, etc. Budgets for upcoming projects are in the range from $2,500 to $50,000 all-inclusive of design, creation and installation of artwork.

Gaithersburg Seeks “Fixers” for Annual Fix-It Fair

The Environmental Affairs Committee is planning a second Fix-It Fair on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Casey Community Center. Residents are invited to make an appointment to bring in personal items in need of repair, such as toasters, bicycles or jewelry. The repair will be performed for free. The “right to repair” and ability to fix material is crucial to transitioning away from a disposal society. Fixers are key to saving useful materials from landfills. The City is seeking volunteer “fixers” with experience in:

Date Set For St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Gaithersburg; Interested in Participating?

The City in partnership with The Peterson Companies & rio, will host the 21^st St. Patrick’s Day Parade at rio, at Rio Boulevard & Grand Corner Avenue. Free parking is available in three garages along Washingtonian Boulevard. Dozens of units will march in the parade, including Celtic dancers, bagpipe bands, school groups, clowns, fire trucks, equestrian units, service organizations, & more.

Community groups & other organizations are invited to march. It is a great way to be involved in the community & get your group noticed. Past participants have included Celtic dancers, bagpipe bands, school groups, clowns, fire trucks, equestrian units, service organizations, & more.
