Macondo Food Express is coming to 811 Russell Ave in Gaithersburg. The Colombian restaurant is taking the space of Perroloco (also Colombian), which closed in the spring of 2020.

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigative Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 17-year-old from Montgomery Village. Daviana Pamela Hernandez was last seen in the 9700 block of Hellingly Place. Hernandez is approximately 5-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 120 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Daviana Pamela Hernandez is asked to call the Montgomery County Police SVID at (240) 773- 5400 or the police non-emergency number at (301) 279- 8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.
Athens Grill has been a Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village staple for over 30 years– the restaurant opened at 9124 Rothbury Drive in Goshen Plaza in 1991. A few weeks back the restaurant suffered a sprinkler malfunction that led to a bevy of issues that have temporarily closed the restaurant.
We spoke with the owner of the restaurant who told us that following the sprinkler malfunction, the restaurant has had to replace every piece of cooking equipment and has undergone two professional cleanings as well as additional cleaning by the owners and employees. Athens Grill is having their new equipment installed this week and is hoping to open by Friday.
The United Stated Department of Justice announced on Monday that Junior Noe Alvarado-Requeno, 24, of Landover, was sentenced to life in federal prison for conspiring to participate in La Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), and for three counts each of “murder in aid of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, as well as for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine.” Alvarado-Requeno was convicted of those charges on November 23, 2021. According to a press release, the evidence showed that in June 2016, Alvarado-Requeno ordered members of the Sailors Clique to murder a suspected rival in the woods at Malcolm King Park in Gaithersburg. Luring him with the promise of sex with a female MS-13 associate, the gang members ambushed the teenaged victim and stabbed him 153 times. It was later determined that the victim did not belong to any gang. You can view the original MCPD news release here.
According to the evidence presented at the four-week trial, between 2015 and 2018, Alvarado-Requeno and his co-defendant, Miguel Angel Corea Diaz, a/k/a “Reaper,” age 41, of Long Branch, New Jersey, controlled and operated the Sailors Locos Salvatruchos Westside (S.L.S.W. or “Sailors”) Clique through a pattern of racketeering activity, which included murder, extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering, and witness tampering. Evidence showed that the gang ran a protection scheme in and around its home base in Langley Park, Maryland, and extorted local businesses by charging them “rent” for the privilege of operating in MS-13 “territory.” The gang also trafficked in illegal drugs, including marijuana, heroin, and cocaine. A large share of the proceeds of the gang’s illegal activities were sent to gang leadership in El Salvador to further promote the goals of the gang, using structured transactions and intermediaries to avoid law enforcement scrutiny.

Coming soon signage is up at Taco Bamba in Quince Orchard Plaza in Gaithersburg. The new restaurant will be located in the space that was formerly home to Urban Crawfish at 670 Quince Orchard Road, next to the upcoming Miyaji Kebab and Rumali Rolls (which is next to Beers & Cheers Too).
Chef Victor Albisu opened the first Maryland location of Taco Bamba in Rockville’s Congressional Plaza in June 2021. Albisu stated that Maryland is a “priority area of growth for Taco Bamba” citing the line at last year’s Rockville opening, according to a report by Bethesda Beat. “We can’t wait to build a whole new food and cocktail menu for our friends in Gaithersburg. It’s a town with an eclectic mix of restaurants serving a diverse community that knows good food.” The news of Taco Bamba’s second MoCo location was first reported by Bethesda Beat. Right now the restaurant is looking at a June or July opening.

The operator was transported to an area hospital with serious injury. She ultimately succumbed to her injuries several hours later. This is an active and ongoing investigation. The collision is now being investigated by the Montgomery County Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU). Gaithersburg City Manager Tanisha Briley announced the appointment of Maria Ruszala Lutero Venus (Ruth Lutero) as Director of Gaithersburg’s Department of Information Technology. The position has been vacant since the retirement of Pete Cottrell in October of 2021. Business Systems Division Manager Brian Helms has been serving as Acting Director in the interim.

True Food Kitchen, the award-winning, seasonally-inspired restaurant and scratch bar, opens Monday, April 25 for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront. This marks the second Montgomery County location (Bethesda), third Maryland location for True Food Kitchen, and the 41st nationwide.

A new dessert spot will be opening next month in Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown, as Doki Toki Dessert Shop prepares to take over the location formerly occupied by Mango Mango at 202 Ellington Blvd next to Burger IM. Mango Mango was an Asian dessert spot that opened its first restaurant in New York’s Chinatown in 2013 and served traditional Hong Kong style sweet soup dessert, modern fusion sweets, and pastries. It was in the location from October 2019 until April 2021.
Doki Toki will offer Japanese desserts, including ice cream, mochi donuts, milk tea, and a “lot of other desserts”, according to the representative we spoke with earlier today. They are hoping for a May 15th opening.
