The Gaithersburg Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department (GWGVFD) will be hosting its family-friendly open house on Sunday, October 8th at 801 Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg from 12pm until 4pm. The event will offer experiences for the entire family, including food, beverages, and music provided by the department. There will be be fire safety demonstrations, a moon bounce, the opportunity to climb onto a firetruck, and meet and greets with firefighters, EMTs, and Sparky the mascot.

Since 1927 the Gaithersburg Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department has served the communities of Gaithersburg, Washington Grove, Derwood and Montgomery Village.  The GWGVFD operates two stations with both volunteer and career personnel. Their volunteers are involved operationally as Firefighters, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. They also have administrative volunteers with many of their members having served for more than 20 years.

Per the GWGVFD, “Station 8 is consistently the busiest station in Montgomery County and is on the corner of Montgomery Village Avenue and Russell Avenue.  Station 8 houses Engine 708, Aerial Tower 708, ATV 708, ATV 708B, Brush 708, Medic 708, Medic 708B, Ambulance 708 and Ambulance 708C. Ambulance 708C is staffed completely by volunteers and has the equipment and staffing capability of being upgraded to Medic 708C. Canteen 708 is also housed at Station 8 and is staffed by our volunteers. Station 28is at the corner of Muncaster Mill and Shady Grove Roads.  Station 28 is home to Engine 728, Ambulance 728 and Hazmat 728. The GWGVFD is run by a Board of Directors and operational officers who are elected by the membership.”

A truck started leaking carbon dioxide after a fitting broke causing a hazmat situation near Robert’s Oxygen on Railroad Avenue & Oakmont Ave in Washington Grove, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Peringer.

CSX railroad traffic was temporarily stopped in both directions and some local roads were closed in the area.

At this time the leak is controlled/shut off and no injuries were reported.

Hershey’s Restaurant (Washington Grove) to Reopen Tomorrow, March 4th

For over half a century, Hershey’s has been serving what many believe is the best friend chicken in the area.

The Restaurant closed back in December 15th, when indoor dining was restricted in Montgomery County.

In a Facebook post today, they announced that they’ll be reopening tomorrow, Thursday, March 4th with modified hours and menu.

“Guess what? Hershey’s is opening back up this Thursday, March 4th…..so come on over and get some of our legendary fried chicken or other delicious menu items (dine in or take it to go). Hours of operation (subject to change) are:

Monday: Closed (deep cleaning day)
Tuesday – Friday: 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Sunday: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM

*** Breakfast will be offered Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM ***
