Niche has released its “2025 Best Public Middle Schools” rankings based on “rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education.” Maryland has 24 local school systems, which function as its school districts. These include one for each of the state’s 23 counties, plus one for Baltimore City.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Baltimore seized 695 pounds of the psychedelic drug DMT on June 11, 2025, from shipments originating in Mexico and destined for Harford County, Maryland. The substance, a Schedule I hallucinogen with no approved medical use in the U.S., had an estimated street value of $555,000. (more…)


The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has reported that 62 white-tailed deer tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in 2024. This neurological disease affects deer, elk, and moose. In Montgomery County, three deer were found to have the disease, contributing to the ongoing management and monitoring efforts in the region.
