A Maryland woman was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to Medicaid fraud for falsely claiming to be a registered nurse, fraudulently obtaining employment at Denton Nursing and Rehab, and causing Maryland Medicaid to pay $3,576.20 for unqualified nursing services. (more…)
Three former MVA employees were convicted for their roles in a bribery and identity fraud scheme that involved selling fraudulent driving credentials and allowing imposters to take written tests on behalf of applicants.
According to the Maryland Department of Agriculture, state lab testing has detected highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (HPAI) in a Montgomery County backyard flock, prompting a quarantine of affected premises and the depopulation of birds to prevent its spread. While the risk to the general public remains low, officials urge flock owners to follow biosecurity measures, register their birds, and report suspected cases, with additional precautions recommended for hunters and those in close contact with poultry.
A hit-and-run in Gaithersburg on January 27, 2025, led to a stolen vehicle, a home invasion in Germantown, and an armed police pursuit across state lines, ending in Virginia with the arrest of 32-year-old Esmeraldo Martinez De La Cruz, who was reported missing from New York along with his 4-year-old daughter. The Maryland Department of Labor’s Office of Financial Regulation, along with 47 other state regulators, reached an $80 million settlement with Block, Inc. for failing to comply with anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act laws, with Maryland receiving $1.6 million and Block agreeing to improve its compliance program.
