Shop Maryland Tax-Free week begins on Sunday, August 11, and runs through Saturday, August 17. Any clothing and shoes that cost $100 or less will be exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax this week. The first $40 of any backpack will also be exempt from the 6% sales tax.

On Thursday, Governor Wes Moore announced that the Maryland Higher Education Commission has awarded $18.75 million in campus safety grants to Maryland’s colleges and universities, including Montgomery College. Per the State of Maryland: “Governor Wes Moore today urged Marylanders to continue to monitor the path of the remnants of Hurricane Debby and to prepare for its possible impacts to the state. The storm is expected to travel through the Carolinas and Virginia before arriving in Maryland later today, with impacts  continuing into tomorrow. Montgomery County has announced it was recently selected by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to host two EV charging stations as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program. The stations will be located at the Colesville Park & Ride at 13504 New Hampshire Ave. and Montgomery County Parking Lot 12 at 1920 Seminary Rd., both in Silver Spring.

Bethesda’s Katie Ledecky made history in her final race of the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning the women’s 800m freestyle for the fourth consecutive Olympics. She ended with two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal in 2024, and took to Instagram to send her well wishes to fellow Marylander Kevin Durant as the men’s basketball team aims for a gold medal.
