Vehicle Struck by Freight Train; No Injuries Reported

According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Pete Piringer, a utility truck was struck by a train in the area of the Nebel St railroad crossing in Rockville around 7:30pm on Thursday evening. The truck ended up on the CSX railroad tracks between Randolph Rd & Nicholson Rd and the driver/occupant(s) of the vehicle reportedly left the scene before fire and rescue arrived. There have been no injuries reported.

Vacuum Causes Early Sunday Morning Fire; No Injuries

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call at approximately 12:30am, just after midnight on Sunday morning, for smoke coming from a two story home on the 700 block of Silver Spring avenue. According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the build of the fire was knocked down on the first floor by 12:50am with firefighters checking for possible extension of the fire.

According to Piringer, there were multiple competent ignition sources, but based upon statements from the occupant of the home and the pattern of the fire, the cause was likely a vacuum cleaner in close proximity to a mattress. The lone occupant of the home was able to get out safely and the home incurred approximately $100K worth of damages. The resident will be temporarily displaced. Police Investigating Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash In Montgomery County Sunday Morning

Per Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash in which one person was killed early this morning in Montgomery County.

Shortly after 3:35 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack responded to northbound Interstate-270 south of Montrose Road, where two separate, but related crashes occurred. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2015 Tesla Model S and a 2007 Toyota Sienna were traveling north on I-270 when the Tesla struck the rear of the Toyota before both vehicles came to a stop on the interstate. The driver and two of the five other passengers of the Toyota remained in the vehicle following the crash.

Public Safety Career Fair to be Held on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Gaithersburg

Per Montgomery County: In partnership with Montgomery County’s public safety departments, its Office of Human Resources will hold a two-session Public Safety Career Fair for job seekers 18-and-over on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the County’s Public Safety Training Academy in Gaithersburg. The County is seeking to fill more than 100 positions across the County’s public safety cluster.

The Public Safety Training Academy is located at 8751 Snouffer School Rd. in Gaithersburg. The Public Safety Career Fair will have a morning session from 9-11 a.m. and an afternoon session from 1-3 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/JOBFAIR.

Cat Rescued After Being Trapped Inside Walls of Burtonsville Home

At approximately 9:42am Saturday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a call on Strauss Terrace in Burtonsville for a cat trapped inside of a wall.

Upon arrival, units were told that the cat fell from a third floor crawl space and was trapped within the first floor walls. After breaching the wall and using a toy to lure the scared cat out, the cat was rescued and reunited with its owner outside of the walls at the Burtonsville home.

MCFRD Respond to Apartment Fire in Wheaton

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fire at the Amherst Square Apartments (11509 Elkin St) in Wheaton around 12pm on Friday, September 9. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS, the fire was located on the terrace level of the three-story complex. The room and its contents were destroyed by the fire and one family (one adult, two children) have been displaced. Firefighters assisted some people from the building and there were no injuries reported. We will post an update when more information becomes available.

Gus the Chocolate Lab Rescued From Little Seneca Lake at Black Hill Park

Gus, a chocolate lab, got away from his owner on Thursday afternoon and chased a beaver into Black Hill Lake in Boyds. He became distressed while returning to shore and units from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (Quince Orchard FS731, which was training nearby) assisted Maryland National Capital Park Police with the rescue. Gus was successfully rescued and reunited with his owner.

Update: Driver of Vehicle That Crashed Into Gaithersburg Townhomes Has Died

Victor Cascella, 62, of Gaithersburg has died from injuries sustained after crashing his car into two Gaithersburg townhomes on August 29. According to Montgomery County Police, “the investigation by detectives has revealed that the driver of a 2016 white BMW was traveling southbound on Orchard Ridge Dr. when, for reasons unknown at this time, crossed over the center median, left the roadway and crashed into the townhome residences of 432 and 434 Orchard Ridge Dr. The BMW and building engulfed in flames damaging both residences as well as 430 and 428 Orchard Ridge Dr.”  Investigators believe the man was suffering from a medical emergency at the time of the crash.

According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services Pete Piringer, Fire/Explosive Investigators believe that the fire began in the vehicle’s engine compartment before spreading to house. The inhabitants of the homes were temporarily trapped upstairs, but rescue units were able to get them out with ladders. Six adults have been displaced and damages are estimated to be $400,000.

Vehicle Driven Into Home Causes Fire in Gaithersburg; Multiple People Rescued

A vehicle was driven into a house on the 400 block of Orchard Ridge Drive near Twin Lakes Drive in Gaithersburg, a little before 3pm on Monday afternoon, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) spokesperson, Pete Piringer.

A neighbor has told us that a vehicle crossed the median and crashed into townhouse-style condo, which started a fire in the car that extended to the house. The witness tells us that the driver has been transported to hospital, but that they are currently unsure on condition or cause of crash. There were no other passengers. The inhabitants of the home were temporarily trapped in upstairs, but Rescue units were able to get them out with ladders.

MCFRS Respond to Fire at Germantown Home

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a fire that was visible from the rear of a home on the 1200 block of Quail Woods Drive in Germantown a little before 3pm on Sunday afternoon, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer. Upon arrival, crews found an active fire on the deck of a middle-of-the-row townhouse and were able to quickly extinguish it with little to no extension to the home. No injuries were reported and the only damage incurred seems to be to the deck and a few items on it. Additional photos below, courtesy of Battalion Chief Jason Blake.
