Whitman Alumna Abby Meyers Drafted in the First Round of WNBA Draft

Abby Meyers is Whitman High School’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,700 points and was the Ivy League Player of the Year last year before transferring to the University of Maryland for her senior season. Meyers, who was a captain in her only year with the Terps, was drafted 11th overall in the first round of the WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings.

In an interview with the Diamondback earlier this year, she credited her  junior and senior years at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda as helping her evolve as a teammate and leader, playing a big role in being named a captain ahead of her first season at Maryland. ESPN’s post-draft analysis states, “After three seasons at Princeton, Meyers was impressive against upgraded competition in the Big Ten. She averaged 14.3 PPG and routinely made tough shots. Meyers also had career highs in assists and steals, and almost immediately took over as a leader for a Terrapins team that made the Elite Eight. The Wings roster is now ballooning with four players acquired in the first round, but Meyers could slide in as a backup at either guard spot. — Charlie Creme.”

MoCo Native and National Champion Jordan Hawkins Officially Declares for the NBA Draft

Jordan Hawkins, who is coming off of leading the UConn Huskies to a National Championship, has officially declared for the NBA Draft. Hawkins is a Montgomery County native who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and Gaithersburg High School for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to DeMatha. Below is his announcement:

MoCo’s Jordan Hawkins Leads the UConn Huskies Into Tonight’s NCAA Tournament Championship Game

MoCo native Jordan Hawkins leads the #4 seed UConn Huskies (30-8, 13-7 Big East) against the #5 seed San Diego State Aztecs (32-6, 15-3 MWC) at 9:20 pm tonight in the NCAA Tournament National Championship.

Jordan Hawkins averages three made 3-pointers per game for the Huskies, averaging 16.2 points per game with a 38.6% three point shooting percentage. Hawkins is a Montgomery County native who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and Gaithersburg High School for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to DeMatha. His UConn Huskies enter the game at 7.5 point favorites.

25 MoCo High School Student-Athletes Will Mentor 100 Children Through Upcoming Program

25 student-athletes from five different Montgomery County  high schools are currently going through leadership training with Adam Bradley’s Lead ‘Em Up to prepare for the Student-Athlete Mentor Program (SAMP), created by Joseph Hooks and the 480 Club.

The participating student-athletes had to interview in order to be hired for the stipend, which is fully funded by the Montgomery County Department of Health & Humans Services (DHHS). After the student-athletes go through an 8-part Lead ‘Em Up training, they will begin to serve as mentors for the program.

Media Access to Regular Season Athletic Events To Require MCPS Credentials

District athletics events are extremely popular and well-attended, requiring meticulous logistical preparation. Media credentialing ensures a safe environment for members of the press covering MCPS athletic events and are essential for easy identification and knowing who may be in our athletic facilities. As such, new protocols governing media coverage of MCPS athletic events will go into effect on April 1, 2023; including:

When: The application for athletic event credentials is open. Media representatives must have the official MCPS Athletic Event Credentials in order to attend and cover any regular season event.

Clarksburg, Paint Branch Athletic Directors Win State Honors

Two Montgomery County Athletic Specialist/Directors, Ed Dalton (Clarksburg) and Heather Podosek (Paint Branch) have earned state honors through the Maryland State Athletic Director Association (MSADA).

Per MCPS: Ed Dalton, athletics specialist/athletic director at Clarksburg High School, has been named the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association’s (MSADA’s) 2023 District 2B Athletic Director of the Year. He was selected by all 25 MCPS athletics specialists for the recognition. Heather Podosek, athletics specialist/athletic director at Paint Branch High School, was selected the 2023 MSADA Co-Athletic Director of the Year. They will receive their awards at the state conference banquet on Saturday, April 29.

MoCo Native Jordan Hawkins Hits Six Three Pointers As UCONN Beats Gonzaga to Advance to the Final Four

Yesterday we highlighted MoCo native Jordan Hawkins as UCONN prepared to play Gonzaga in an Elite Eight matchup. The young man led his team to a trouncing of Gonzaga, scoring 20 points and hitting six threes to take the #3 seed UCONN to the Final Four with an 82-54 win. Hawkins is a Montgomery County native who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and Gaithersburg High School for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to DeMatha. UCONN plays the winner of Miami/Texas on April 1st.

Hawkins was a top 50 recruit, who came to UConn following two years at powerhouse program DeMathaCatholic (Hyattsville, Md.) under Coach Mike Jones. He played AAU for Team Durant under Coach Angel Hernandez, and as a senior at DeMatha, averaged 19.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.9 blocks, while shooting .636 overall and .464 from three-point range to lead DeMatha to an 11-0 record and was named 2020-21 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. Hawkins was a two-time Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention pick and averaged 20.2 points per game as a sophomore when he was at Gaithersburg High School (per UCONN).

Two $5,000 Scholarships Available to Student-Athletes (Walter Hardy Memorial Fund)

Per MCPS: The Walter Hardy Memorial Fund will award two $5,000 scholarships to MCPS student-athletes. The scholarship honors the accomplishments of deserving student-athletes who have overcome challenges to achieve success in the classroom and in competition. To be eligible, applicants must be Class of 2023 graduating seniors, and:

Applications are available here and are due Monday, May 1. Hardy was an MCPS coach, teacher and athletic director for more than 25 years. He served as head boys’ basketball coach at Paint Branch High School for 17 years. He also was athletic director at John F. Kennedy High School and had been athletic director at Sherwood High School for less than two months when he died in 2017. He was named All-Met Coach of the Year in 2000 after leading Paint Branch to Maryland’s 3A state basketball title.

Walter Johnson Announced Aaron Fiddler as New Varsity Football Coach, Replacing Larry Hurd

Walter Johnson High School has announced the new varsity football head coach, Aaron Fiddler, a couple weeks after previous coach Larry  Hurd made the decision to step down as coach to become the Athletic Coordinator (position previously known as Athletic Director) at the school. Walter Johnson Athletics announced the following:

The Walter Johnson Community would like to extend a warm welcome and congratulations to Coach Aaron Fiddler as our new Head Football Coach.  Coach Fiddler brings incredible knowledge, experience, passion, success, and an ability to develop long lasting relationships with all his students/athletes.  Coach Fiddler will be meeting with his team for the first time on Friday Morning at 7:30 am in the Weight Room at Walter Johnson High School!
