Maryland men’s lacrosse has won the National Championship completed its undefeated season by defeating Cornell 9-7, becoming the first team to complete an undefeated season with a championship since UVA in 2006.

Churchill boys lacrosse has won the Maryland 4A State Championship, after defeating Anne Arundel County powerhouse Broadneck 15-7 in the championship last night. This is the first State Championship in lacrosse for any Montgomery County team (boys or girls).

Just a couple weeks ago, Churchill celebrated Jeff Fritz’s 300th victory as head lacrosse coach at the school, and now his team won the State Championship for the first time.

Northwest Varsity Head Baseball coach, Todd Varesco, has stepped down after 20 years with the program. During his time as head coach, Varesco helped guide Northwest to two State Championships (2012 and 2017). In his goodbye letter, seen below, Varesco states that he will be putting his time towards his family and cites them as the most important reason for moving on.

After lengthy thought and consultation with my family,  I have made the decision to step down as the Varsity Head Baseball Coach at Northwest High School. I am now going to be able to spend time in the spring with my two daughters, my wife and my family.  The amount of time that I will be able to put towards my family now is the largest and most important reason I am moving on.  The Journey has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  To be able to convey and teach life lessons that transcend baseball has been nothing short of amazing.  I will miss the field, the smells, the sounds, the players, the community, and more than anything my staff that took the journey with me. There are many people that I want to thank, too many, as I know I will forget some of you here, but know that truly I have not forgotten.

The Lacrosse Network has announced that “Fate of a Sport”, a documentary that details the launch of the PLL– a professional lacrosse league founded by Montgomery County natives Mike and Paul Rabil, will premier at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival on June 15th.

Brothers Mike and Paul Rabil of Montgomery Village wanted to help make the league Paul was playing in (MLL) better for the players involved. When they saw they wouldn’t be able to work with the MLL on improving the product, the Rabil brothers re-created professional Lacrosse with their new league, the PLL.

Clarksburg Boys Volleyball recently won back-to-back county championships. The team lost its first match of the year at Churchill High School, 3-2. Since that match the team didn’t lose a single set (42-0) on the way to becoming repeat Champions.

The Coyotes became back-to-back champions after taking the third set against WJ earlier in the week (25-23). Coach Dickinson and the team ended the regular season going 10-1.

Hello Blue Devil Nation! I’m so thankful for the opportunity to take on my new role as the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Springbrook High School. I have spent the last 11 years coaching basketball. I originally got my start as a coach at St.Thomas the Apostle in Chicago, IL before transitioning to the JV boys basketball coach at the University of Chicago Woodlawn Charter High School. After 5 years of coaching, I took over the varsity program at UCW and set the record (still standing!) for regular season and playoff wins. In 2017, my husband and I relocated to the DMV and I began working with the varsity program at Springbrook High School. In 2018 I accepted the role of the JV boys basketball coach here at Springbrook  while also coaching the boys team at Argyle Middle School, where I previously taught. I’ve been teaching Biology at Springbrook since 2019 and most recently, coaching our JV team which finished the 2021-22 season with an undefeated record!

A little about my personal background. I was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri and played collegiately at the University of Chicago. I began graduate school early and received my bachelors degree in Public Policy with a specialization in Education Reform and masters degree in teaching, both from the University of Chicago.

Yesterday Winston Churchill High School in Potomac celebrated Jeff Fritz’s 300th victory as head lacrosse coach at the school.

Churchill welcomed Montgomery County Councilmember and alumnus Andrew Friedson to the school’s game against Sherwood High School. At halftime Councilmember Friedson presented his old lacrosse coach with a Proclamation from Montgomery County for Coach Fritz’s 300th career win.

The Northwest Jaguars Coed Volleyball Team, coached by Jaqueline Queirolo, finished its regular season with an undefeated record of 11-0, making them the #1 seed heading into the County Playoffs next week. “I’m so proud of this team who truly came together day after day and worked incredibly hard. They focused and fought for every point and hustled constantly,” Said Coach Quierolo.

Northwest did not drop a set all season (33-0). Co-captain Senior Andrew Ahn consistently led Northwest with kills and blocks and brought the team together through encouragement on and off the court. “We have worked extremely hard and deserve to be where we are, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of players to finish out my Senior year with,” said Ahn.

The Detroit Lions surprised many by going defensive line with their first two picks in the draft after selecting Josh Paschal with their second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the 46th overall pick. Paschal is a Prince George’s County native who attended school and played football at Good Counsel in Olney, where he was ranked among the top defensive ends in the country.

Paschal has overcome plenty in his NCAA football career. After a strong freshman season in 2017, he was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma lesion that was discovered on his foot, in August of 2018. It was a rare, aggressive form of skin cancer called acral lentiginous melanoma, or ALM. And it needed to be treated immediately. Josh had multiple surgeries on his foot to remove the cancerous growth and replace the damaged tissue.
