Update: Dakota Lilian Nicole Smith has been located safe and unharmed

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Dakota Lilian Nicole Smith, a missing 14-year-old. Smith was last seen on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at approximately 1:20 a.m., in the 20100 block of Loading Rock Place of Montgomery Village. Smith is believed to be in the Germantown area, driving a silver 2011 Chevy Malibu bearing MD tag 5BA4544.

Neal is approximately 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. She has brown eyes and long brown hair with a blond streak that she is currently wearing in a bun. Neal was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with an image of a goaltender mask on it from the movie, “Friday the 13^th,” black Adidas sweatpants and pink Crocs. She has her ears and nose pierced. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

MCPD: Traffic Stop in Germantown Leads to Seizure of Fentanyl and Methamphetamine

Montgomery County Police issued a press release today announcing that a traffic stop in Germantown on March 8 led to the discovery of 20 suspected Fentanyl pills, approximately 21 grams of suspected Crystal Methamphetamine, Crack Cocaine and drug paraphernalia. This is the third press release regarding traffic stops that MCPD has released since Councilmember Will Jawando introduced Bill 12-23, the Safety and Traffic Equity in Policing (STEP) Act, on February 28, which will limit traffic stops that he says have resulted in racial disparities.

Per MCPD: “Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Community Action Team have arrested 38-year-old Harry Perkins of Germantown for Possessing Fentanyl and Crystal Methamphetamine with the Intent to Distribute, on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. At approximately 11:35 p.m., officers observed a Chevrolet Equinox commit a moving violation in the area of Circle Gate Dr. and Wisteria Dr. Officers initiated a traffic stop of the Chevrolet in the area of Great Seneca Hwy. and Wisteria Dr.

Body Found on Blake High School Grounds Early Saturday Morning

James Hubert Blake High School principal Robert Sinclair Jr. sent out a message informing the Blake community of a body found on school grounds early Saturday morning. According to the message, a jogger who was using the school track found an unresponsive individual on school grounds and attempted to revive the individual unsuccessfully. Emergency personnel were also unable to revive the individual. Additional information can be found in the full letter to the community, seen below:

MCPD Responds to Shooting Near Wheaton Mall

Montgomery County Police responded to a shooting in the 11160 block of Veirs Mill Rd. at approximately 11am on Saturday morning.

According to police, “A victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A suspect is in custody. The scene is secure and there is no current threat to the community.” Public safety reporter Cordell Pugh reports that one suspect is in custody after the victim was shot in the face and transported to the hospital.

Driver of Van Who Caused Metrobus to Crash Into Jewelry Store Thursday Morning Has Been Charged With Four Infractions, According to Police

WMATA Transit Police tweeted the following regarding the Metrobus crash into a jewelry store in weekend this morning: “Driver of van that caused morning Metrobus accident charged with 4 infractions: (1) unsafe lane change, (2) failure to control speed to avoid a collision, (3) improper right turn, and (4) failure to wear corrective lens. Thx to @mcpnews and @mcfrs for their on-the-scene support.”

At approximately 9:30am on Thursday morning there was a collision involving a Metrobus that closed Veirs Mill Rd between Reedie Dr and University Blvd, according to Montgomery County Police. $20,000 Incentives Proposed for Joining County Police Department

Per Montgomery County:

Montgomery County and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge No. 35 have come to an agreement to begin offering a $20,000 bonus for new sworn police recruits. Full implementation of the bonus program would require County Council approval for Fiscal Year 2024 and beyond budgets.

New Legislation Introduced Aimed at Having Certain Businesses Improve Late-Night Safety

The Late-Night Business Safety Plan bill was introduced on Feb. 14 to the Council, which will now consider it. “Last year, we met with business leaders and community members in Silver Spring to discuss the situation and concerns with late night establishments over crime and safety,” said County Executive Elrich. “Since then, we have added safety cameras and new license plate reading technology in areas where they are needed. We have used crime date to reconfigure our patrol strategies. When passed, this bill will be another tool to help keep the community safe by relying on our businesses that cater to a late-night crowd to be part of the solution.”

Changes already in place to improve safety in Silver Spring include the addition of three high-visibility morning posts for officers in the Downtown Silver Spring area, more bicycle officers on patrol and more officers involved in community engagement and crime prevention areas. Adopt-A-Neighborhood programs and support from Maryland State Police have helped the area see fewer incidents of crime since last summer. Adding the Late-Night Business Safety Plan is the next step in addressing safety concerns.

County Executive Marc Elrich Announces New Legislation Aimed at Improving Late-Night Safety Across Montgomery County

The bill would establish new rules for businesses that operate between midnight and 6 a.m. in areas which generate high calls for service. Businesses that operate in those late hours would be required to develop a business safety plan and have it approved by police.
