Headline updated to reflect that Olney’s NNO event is the biggest in Montgomery County
An Olney summer tradition returns on August 1 when local first responders and the community come together to celebrate Olney’s 28th National Night Out (NNO), from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fair Hill shopping center, located at Olney-Sandy Spring Road and Spartan Road.

Per Montgomery County Police: “MCPD 4th District officers are on scene of an officer involved shooting in the 4300 block of Havard Street. The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has been notified and are enroute. The scene is secured and there is not a current threat to the community.”
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer tweeted that MCFRS “assisted injured persons (from assault) found in several nearby locations within close proximity, @MCFRS_EMIHS transported at least 4 patients to local hospitals.”
Per the City of Gaithersburg: Several Gaithersburg neighborhoods are joining communities across the country to participate in the National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime campaign.
On Tuesday, August 1, these neighborhoods will hold events to increase drug prevention awareness, generate support for anti-crime programs, encourage residents to be involved in their communities, and send a message that neighborhoods and businesses are organized to fight back against crime. The NNO programs help bring together residents, law enforcement agencies, local officials, civic groups, and neighborhood organizations. Participating neighborhoods will be posted closer to event. The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) has hosted its 29th Annual Public Safety Awards Breakfast honoring men and women who provide public safety in the Upcounty. A total of 39 public safety officials from several jurisdictions were recognized and awarded a citation from the Maryland State Senate and Congressman David Trone.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating missing 25-year-old missing adult from Damascus– Johnnai Slater.
She was last seen on Friday, July 14th at approximately 2pm leaving her residence on Honeysuckle Ct. in Damascus. She is 5’5, black hair, a scar above her left eye on her forehead, and has a Roman numeral tattoo on her arm. She was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and black shorts.
Montgomery County Police (MCP) say that on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at approximately 11:18 p.m., MCP officers responded to the 5400 block of Marinelli Road for the report of an assault.
Per Montgomery County Police, “The preliminary investigation has revealed that there was an argument between the male victim and the adult male suspect. The suspect then displayed a machete and threatened the victim who then managed to enter his vehicle and leave the scene. The victim then contacted the police. Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes detectives are looking for a 16-year-old wanted in connection with the shooting death of a Damascus man killed on Father’s Day. Isaiah Jamael Brown-Hawkins is accused of shooting and killing 32-year-old James Joel Austin on Sunday, June 18 in the 9800 block of Bethesda Church Road in Damascus.
At approximately 9:58 p.m., 5th District officers responded to the address for calls of a shooting. Officers located the victim in the parking lot of the apartment complex with an apparent gunshot wound. Austin was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown-Hawkins drove away in a Honda that was located in Washington, DC, however Brown-Hawkins has not been found.
The Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Investigative Section is looking for a 65-year-old missing from Aspen Hill.
65-year-old David Ways was last seen on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., leaving his residence on Hewitt Ave. He is 5’4″, 145 lbs, gray hair, and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, khaki pants and black/white Nike shoes. UPDATE: Aiden Offutt has been located safe and unharmed. The Montgomery County Department of Police Special Victims Investigations Division is looking for a 10-year-old missing from Montgomery Village.
10 year-old Aiden Offutt was last seen on Stedwick Road and Watkins Mill Road in Montgomery Village on Thursday July 13, 2023, around 6:45 P.M. He is 4-feet, 10-inches tall, 90 lbsx with short black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt, black/yellow sneakers and carrying a red hooded sweatshirt.
