On Monday, November 6th, immigrant rights group CASA issued a statement via social media that was deleted and followed up by a different message. Several Montgomery Councilmembers issued statements denouncing the initial CASA statement the next day. CASA’s Executive Director Gustavo Torres issued the following statement today:

Per Montgomery County: “Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmembers Sidney Katz and Gabe Albornoz and the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) announced a new public safety program that will reimburse residents and businesses in select areas of the County who install security cameras in their homes and businesses to help reduce crime. The Police-Private Security Camera Program will reimburse eligible residents up to $250 for a security camera installation, and eligible businesses and nonprofits up to $1,250. The program launched on November 15 with $255,000 in funding for the current fiscal year that County officials say could lead to over 1,000 new cameras installed in key areas with increased crime around the County.

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Aging and Disability Services Division continues to provide free hearing aids and personal sound amplifiers to eligible residents age 60-and-over. The County is partnering with Access HEARS, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect individuals with hearing loss to the solutions they need to age well.

Per Montgomery County: “Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation is seeking County high school students to serve as ‘Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors’. The project-based learning program teaches teens leadership skills, the importance of roadway design, law enforcement, outreach and engagement techniques to address traffic safety needs in their community. Applications are being accepted through Friday, Dec. 15.

Per Montgomery County: “Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) will open registration on Sunday, Dec. 3, for limited availability whiskey lotteries that provide opportunities to purchase highly sought spirits. These lotteries will be open only to Montgomery County residents and licensees. ABS expects to release more than 400 bottles for purchase in the lotteries.
