Today, the County Council and County Executive Marc Elrich announced that this Monday, October 12 will be officially recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and it will continue to be recognized annually by the county.
The decision, which was brought to the council by Councilmember Nancy Navarro, was met with unanimous support. This day, which had traditionally been associated with Columbus Day, will recognize and celebrate the “stories and cultures of our Native communities,” Navarro said.

Businesses and nonprofit organizations may be eligible for grants for expenditures they have incurred related to health and safety requirements from the State and County for reopening their business between March 16, 2020, and 30 days following the date when the County declares it is moving to Phase 3 of reopening. The County is still operating under Phase 2 reopening guidelines.
Montgomery County Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to enact an LGBTQ+ Bill of Rights, the first of its kind in the state of Maryland. Initially proposed by the Council’s first LGBTQ+ member, Evan Glass, the law will expand existing anti-discrimination codes to include gender expression and HIV status.
Included within gender expression-based discrimination are willful failure to use an individual’s preferred name or pronouns and discrimination against an individual because of their clothing, hairstyle, behavior, voice, or similar characteristics.
