Montgomery Parks will begin its annual deer population management operations in September 2024 and continue through March 2025 to address the overpopulation of deer in the county. During this time, hunters will cull deer in 59 parks through archery and firearms hunting programs, or park police sharpshooting operations. Signs alerting the public to deer population management programs are posted in advance throughout affected parks and in nearby communities. Montgomery Parks and the Montgomery Parks Foundation have announced the commission of a mural for the park activity building at Glenmont Local Park (3201 Randolph Road) in Wheaton-Glenmont. They are seeking design ideas from the community that “reflect the history, values, stories, and aspirations of the diverse neighborhood.” (more…)


Montgomery Parks urges patrons to use caution when recreating on or near Lake Needwood and Lake Frank located within Rock Creek Regional Park due to potential risks associated with high levels of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). Water samples from both lakes are currently being evaluated by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to determine if levels are harmful. Visual indicators including discolored water and algal mats have been observed in portions of both lakes. Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) can produce dangerous levels of toxic microcystin.

A large bear has been spotted a few times this week on or near Big Woods Rd in Dickerson, west of Boyds and Germantown and north of Poolesville. Photo courtesy of @DMVentrepreneuer on instagram. There have been several bear sightings in Montgomery County this year, but they have slowed as most bears move west as we move into mid-summer

Montgomery Parks is opening a new mountain biking course, Wheaton Gravity Mountain Bike Park, to draw thrill-seeking riders to Wheaton Regional Park. The grand opening takes place on Sunday, July 21 from 11am until 12pm (Rain date: Sunday, July 28, 2024, 11am- 12pm). The event will take place in the Wheaton Regional Park Shorefield area (2000 Shorefield Road, Wheaton, Md., 20902). The mountain bike park is located in the woods behind the Adventure Playground.
