Good Counsel alumna and Silver Spring native Margaret “Midge” Purce capped off a remarkable comeback season by helping lead Gotham FC to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit in the NWSL Championship. Purce, who played every minute of the title match, was a major part of Gotham’s run despite suffering a torn ACL just last year.

In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland, Judge Theresa Chernosky found Iris Alonzo-Salgado, 24, of Frederick, guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and participating in a criminal organization resulting in death.

Former Our Lady of Good Counsel quarterback Frankie Weaver delivered a breakout performance on Saturday, throwing for career highs of 428 yards and six touchdowns as Monmouth rolled past North Carolina A&T 63-19. The 6’5, 215-pound redshirt freshman from New Market, Maryland put together one of the most impressive quarterback performances in the program’s recent history.

Back in June, we reported that New Jersey-based Bubbakoo’s Burritos had signed on to open its first Montgomery County location at 16822 Georgia Avenue in Olney. Since then, the “coming soon” signage on the storefront has been removed, leading many to wonder if the project was still moving forward.

Chicken Salad Chick is expanding in Maryland, with a new location planned for the Olney Village Center. The fast-growing restaurant, known for its Southern-style chicken salad, will open at 18209 Village Center Drive, next to Hallmark, in the space previously occupied by a karate studio.

Olney’s Winter City Lights opens for the 2025 season on Friday, November 28th.
