Thomas Edison High School of Technology is unique among Montgomery County public high schools. Students enrolled in all MCPS comprehensive high schools may apply for enrollment in one of Edison’s eighteen highly acclaimed career and technology education programs. The Cosmetology students will be opening the Edison Salon (12501 Dalewood Dr. Silver Spring MD 20906) on Wednesday, December 6 to hold a SkillsUSA fundraiser. From 8:30am until 8:30pm, the student operated salon will offer limited services for $20 each, such as:
Per MCDOT: “On Tuesday, Nov. 28, starting at 7 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual public hearing to discuss the latest plans for the Heritage Triangle Trail Project in Sandy Spring. The public will have an opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions.
The Heritage Triangle Trail is a project to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety along Dr. Bird (MD. 182) and Norwood Roads. The Dr. Bird Road section is planned to run along the east side of Dr. Bird Road (MD 182) from Sandy Spring Road (MD 108) to the current terminus of an existing shared use path located approximately 1,400 feet south of MD 108. The Norwood Road section is planned to run along the east side of Norwood Road from just north of the driveway to the Adventure Park at Sandy Spring to just south of Ednor Road, where it will tie into an existing shared use path approximately 1,700 ft. south of the Adventure Park. Public input is encouraged and may influence the design of this project.
Actor Sean Whalen who credits his 1993 “Got Milk?” Commercial for changing the course of his life, shared the story behind it on its 30 year anniversary. The actor, who is a Montgomery County, Maryland native and 1982 graduate of Sherwood High School also starred in various television shows including Shannon’s Deal and Grace Under Fire, as well as movies, including The People Under the Stairs and Twister. The story he shared regarding the milk commercial (as well as the commercial itself) can be seen below:
“30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY: On this day in 1993 a regional milk commercial came out that changed the course of my life. I went into an audition just a few weeks before where they gave me peanut butter and told me to try to answer the question of “Who shot Alexander Hamilton?” With my mouth full. Then they told me to improvise an ending. They said I got the job because everyone else screamed, yelled, got angry, and threw the phone! I was the only one who looked at the phone and essentially said, “My whole life led to this moment, and I failed… “ When I got to the set, they just said… “Do what you did in the audition” and Michael Bay shot it over and over for 12 hours. This job killed my commercial career, branded me as “the milk guy” for years, but was loved by Spielberg which got me the gig in Twister, which gave my theatrical career a huge boost. Less and less people know what I’m talking about when I mentioned it so it is fading out of the zeitgeist. But that’s OK. I really haven’t been able to eat peanut butter since but it was a good trade off.”
Washington Parent readers name The Adventure Park (16701 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring) winner in 3 “Parents Picks” categories Sandy Spring, MD: After nearly 25,000 votes, Washington Parent Magazine announced its readers voted The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring Friends School the best Amusement Park and Climbing Destination in the greater Washington area in their Parents Picks competition for the second consecutive year. The Adventure Park also won the best “Date Night Venue” for the first time and placed as a finalist in the “Party Venue” competition.
“I am thrilled to hear that the Adventure Park at Sandy Spring has won the “Best Amusement Park” and “Best Climbing Destination” in the DMV area for the second year in a row. It’s a wonderful facility for outdoor recreation, family fun, parties and gathering for guests of all ages. My own family loves it there, our Scouts Troops just finished a troop outing there this past weekend – always a hit with the Scouts, and it gives me great pride in my district to have this gem right in our own backyard.
The Sherwood High School Varsity baseball program for has earned a Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
The team Academic Excellence Award honors high school and college programs coached by ABCA members that post a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Sherwood students were recognized for achieving a 3.48 team GPA.
Per Adventure Park: On 8/1, Washington Parent Magazine readers nominated The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring Friends School for best “Amusement & Water Park” in the Parents Picks competition. The Adventure Park was also nominated in the “Party Venue”, “Climbing” location, & “Date Night” location categories. Olney Winery has been operating since 2012, initially as The Winery at Olney. The winemaker was previously located at 18127 Town Center Drive in the Fair Hill shopping center in Olney until September of last year. In 2016, expanded and opened a tasting room in the stone house at 12810 Shank Farm Way in Hagerstown. In July, Olney Winery opened its new space at 52 Olney Sandy Spring Road in Ashton Market that includes a large outdoor patio. In addition to wine, they’re also offering pizza at the location (first look video available below).

MoCo native (Brookeville) and 2023 Sherwood graduate, Bryan Kim, has won the 75th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, held at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, South Carolina. He will be attending Duke University in the fall.
Kim, 18, joins Jason Widener (1988) as Duke players to etch their name on the U.S. Junior Amateur Trophy that includes the likes of major champions Tiger Woods, Johnny Miller, David Duval, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler and Brian Harman, this year’s Open winner at Royal Birkdale who sent a congratulatory video message to the champion. Kim advanced to the championship match, where he defeated Joshua Bai. A breakdown of the championship can be found here. Kim is 11th in the latest iteration of the American Junior Golf Association rankings and 443rd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. As champion, Kim receives the following:
Kameron Simmonds, a sophomore at the University of Tennessee, will be representing Jamaica in the team’s World Cup matchup against France at 6 am on Sunday, July 23. Simmonds, who is the third generation of players in her family to represent Jamaica on the national stage grew up in Midlothian, VA, but her father Greg Simmonds is a graduate of Sherwood High School.
Kameron is following in her father and grandfather’s footsteps, as both men previously played for Jamaica’s national soccer team. In an interview discussing her family’s love for soccer and each other with Knox News, Simmonds said, “The love that we have for the game and each other, it’s just so amazing that I get to continue that legacy within the family. It’s something we can bond over and talk about. It’s just an incredible honor.”

Sherwood High School rising senior Conor Pugh was recognized by county health officials and MCPS for his efforts to produce and distribute diabetes kits for students recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2020, Pugh has packaged tools, including glucose tablets, an insulin cooler, a medical ID bracelet, water bottle, pocket calculator and needle disposal container for storing used needles into a kit to help students adjust to a diabetes diagnosis. He put the kits together as part of his Eagle Scout service project.
