During the 2024 NFL season, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a rib injury that was initially considered “week-to-week.” The injury occurred on October 20, 2024, during the first offensive drive of a game against the Carolina Panthers. The Montgomery County Office of the Inspector General released a report identifying serious deficiencies in MCPS’s background screening process, including a lack of ongoing monitoring for over 12,000 employees and missing Child Protective Services checks for nearly 5,000 individuals. In response, Council President Kate Stewart and Vice President Will Jawando called for immediate corrective action, expressed deep concern over systemic failures, and announced an oversight hearing scheduled for September 26.

To further cement its dedication to the sanctioning of girls flag football across Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland, the Washington Commanders have announced a meaningful commitment to 127 girls flag programs in the DMV over the next two years. The support will include funding, equipment, and additional programming, with the team contributing more than $1 million to grow the game. The announcement marks one of the largest contributions to girls’ youth sports in the region.
