District 4 (Wheaton) Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Commander David Smith shared that specialized team recently officers recovered illegal firearms and pressed fentanyl during two traffic stops on Bel Pre Road and the ICC, leading to the arrest of two individuals. The Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel will offer its final rides at Wheaton Regional Park on Sunday, October 27, before being refurbished and relocated to its original intended home at Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park in Clarksburg. A new carousel is planned for Wheaton in spring 2025, while the beloved miniature train will continue to operate at the park. (more…)


Hesler Saul Sanchez Cruz, a 45-year-old husband and father, was killed early Sunday morning in Wheaton when he was stabbed on the 11300 block of Fern Street in Wheaton. A suspect, 30-year-old Jose Emilio Ortiz Alba, was arrested and charged in Virginia and will be extradited to Montgomery County. Cruz’s daughter has started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with funeral arrangements.

Per the GoFundMe fundraiser: “We tragically lost our dad, Saul, on Sunday morning. He was a vibrant man, who made everyone laugh until tears came out of our eyes and was the greatest story teller who could make you feel fear, happiness, and utter amazement. In this difficult time, we ask of you to help us with our cause and donate whatever you can so that we can lay our dad to rest. Thank you all in [advance].”

Montgomery Parks’ Garden of Lights returns to Brookside Gardens (1800 Glenallan Ave, Wheaton), featuring over 1.5 million LED lights in a dazzling outdoor display. Tickets go on sale October 14, with the exhibit opening on November 22. Tickets are $10 per person for ages 5 and older, with free admission for children under 5 (registration required).
