Germantown Then & Now: What was There Before Milestone?

Learn about the Germantown family that worked the land more than a century before Milestone took shape.

Germantown associates the name Milestone with a shopping Center and housing development, but the family that owned the land for more than 100 years before the company bought it has not even a street named for it. Walmart, Target, Home Depot and other stores now occupy the site of the large farm of William H. Benson. The Benson family’s ties to this area go back to the Revolutionary Days, before there was a Germantown or even a Rt. 118. The only roads at that time were Frederick-Georgetown Road (Rt. 355) and the Road to Monocacy (Clopper Road, Rt. 117).

Seneca Valley High School Calls on Dads to Provide Support

Seneca Valley principal Marc Cohen put out a message to the community calling on local dads to help provide support and provide positive energy during lunch time and after school.

A letter was sent to the community last month detailing that there would be additional security, counselors, central office staff, and MCPD onsite at Seneca Valley beginning on the morning of Monday, October 18th, to help assure a safe and orderly learning environment.

Water Main Break Closes Ridge Road in Clarksburg, Could Cause Low Water Pressure or Outages in Damascus

A water main break in Clarksburg headed towards the Damascus area has created a sinkhole that has closed Ridge Road.

The 24” water main on Ridge Rd is Damascus’ primary domestic water source so low water pressure or outages may occur in the area. WSSC is on scene, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

Germantown Apartment Fire Tuesday Morning Causes $250,000 in Damage

An apartment fire on the 12000 block of Grey Eagle Ct. in Germantown that involved the balconies of two apartments has caused $250,000 in damages and left one family displaced.

The incident, which occurred around 3:45am Tuesday morning, was the result of improperly discarded smoking materials.  The occupants of the apartment smoked a few hours before the fire and placed cigarette butts into a plastic bin used to collect discarded smoking materials, according to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Pete Piringer. The occupants awakened when the balcony was on fire and briefly attempted to fight the fire before evacuating the building.

Crumbl Cookies to Open Second MoCo Location in Germantown

Crumbl Cookies opened its first MoCo location just over a year ago at Federal Plaza in Rockville. Now, the bakery known for its long box of cookies is opening a second location– near Wegmans at The Shops at Seneca Meadows shopping center in Germantown.

The shop will be located at 20650 Seneca Meadows Pkwy, in what used to be home to Sprint, next to Sally Beauty.

Pradman Kaul of Germantown-Based Hughes Network Systems Receives 2021 AIAA Aerospace Communications Award

Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), an innovator in satellite and multi-transport technologies and networks for 50 years, announced today that American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) awarded Pradman P. Kaul, president and CEO of Hughes, the 2021 Aerospace Communications Award. Kaul received the award, which recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of aerospace communications, for his leadership in the creation and development of the very small aperture terminal (VSAT) and its significance to the satellite communications industry.

“Thank you to the AIAA for this honor. It reflects the innovations and contributions of a long line of engineers at Hughes with whom I have had the privilege of working,” said Pradman P. Kaul, president and CEO at Hughes. “As we celebrate half a century since the start of Hughes, I continue to be amazed and humbled by what our industry has accomplished and how much we still stand to achieve.”
