On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, Metrorail will open at 6 a.m. and close at midnight, operating on regular Sunday schedules at all stations. Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess customers may make a reservation to travel on the holiday; however, subscription trips will be canceled.
The people have spoken! After more than 20,000 votes from customers throughout the region, Metro has announced the winner of the competition. The public selected Option 3 as the updated livery design for Metro’s incoming rail fleet (featured photo above).
DC Metro has the most escalators (and elevators) of any transit system in North America with a total of 674. Metro’s longest escalator is at the Wheaton station right here in Montgomery County. The 230 ft. escalator is the longest single span escalator in the entire western hemisphere (video below).

Metro has announced a new progress report highlighting “three years of success for Metro’s joint development real estate program.” The program has delivered eight projects in three years totaling 1,490 residential units (813 affordable) and 1 million square feet of office space, resulting in $15 million in new annual tax revenue for local jurisdictions according to a new progress report on Metro’s 10-Year Strategic Plan. Metro has announce led the launch of its new bus network, the first comprehensive overhaul of the Metrobus system since 1973, on Sunday, June 29. “This transformative initiative will deliver more frequent, reliable, and user-friendly bus service to communities across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, aligning with the region’s evolving travel needs.” This coincides with The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) launch of its major overhaul of the Ride On bus system.
