‘The Roots of Modern Bethesda – Part II’ Will Be Presented Online by Montgomery History on Thursday, July 27

Per Montgomery County: The Bethesda Historical Society’s Hank Levine, who last year led a Montgomery History presentation on the development of Bethesda from 1750-1920, will advance the story of one of the County’s most prominent communities in The Roots of Modern Bethesda—Part II. The online presentation will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 27.

In his original look at the evolution of Bethesda, Mr. Levine addressed the geography and advances in transportation that set the stage for the development of the community.In his continuing look at Bethesda, Mr. Levine will tell the story of how in the century after the end of World War I Bethesda became the affluent suburb and urban center of today.

‘RainScapes’ Rewards Rebate Program Application Portal Will Reopen on Aug. 1

Per Montgomery County: “RainScapes” projects are landscape or design techniques that help reduce stormwater runoff from individual properties. At times, the Montgomery County Department of environmental Protection offers rebates for projects to help defray their costs. The portal to apply for the RainScapes Rebate Program will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

RainScapes can be installed on any kind of property, but those on private, residential, institutional and/ or commercial properties may be eligible for financial assistance.

54-Year-Old Olney Woman Dies After Collision; Police Reconstruction Unit Investigating

Per MCPD: A 54-year-old Olney woman has died following a traffic collision that occurred on Sunday, June 18, 2023. At approximately 4:10 p.m., Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire Rescue Personnel responded to a collision that occurred at East-West Hwy. and Blair Mill Rd.

The preliminary investigation by Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) detectives has revealed that a white 2022 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound on East-West Hwy., when it made a left turn and collided with an eastbound blue 2004 Toyota Sienna. The right rear passenger of the Sienna was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. On Monday, July 17, 2023, the victim died as a result of the injuries she sustained in the collision.

Detectives from the MCPD – 4th District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Sarah Ann Kauffman, a missing 34-year-old. Kauffman was last seen on Wednesday, July 5, 2023. She is 5’2″, 130 lbs., and has blonde hair and hazel eyes. Kauffman may be driving a Silver Mazda with Maryland registration 5FF2582. According to police, she is known to frequent the Gaithersburg and Olney areas.

$4 Million and $1 Million Winning Lottery Tickets Sold Tuesday in Maryland, Two $10,000 Winning Tickets Sold in Gaithersburg

According to a representative from the Maryland lottery, a winning Mega Millions lottery ticket with the Megaplier option worth $4 million was sold at the Lobby Shop at 1 North Charles Street in Baltimore. The base prize amount for a second-tier win in Mega Millions is $1 million, and the person who bought that ticket paid an additional $1 to add the Megaplier option to the ticket, which multiplies any prizes won except the jackpot. The multiplier for last night was 4X, so it quadrupled the $1 million prize to $4 million. There was also a $1 million second-tier winning ticket (without the Megaplier) sold at National Pike Fuel at 5931 Baltimore National Pike in Catonsville.

Locally, there were two third-tier winning tickets worth $10,000 each sold in Gaithersburg: one at Watkins Mill Beer & Wine at 857 Russell Avenue; and the other at the 7-Eleven at 8946 North Westland Drive.

Potbelly Signs Multi-Unit Development Agreement That Includes 27 Maryland Locations

Per Franchising.com, “the iconic neighborhood sandwich shop, today announced that it has finalized a 27-shop agreement in Maryland with the company’s founder Bryant Keil and his son Hampden.” The agreement grants Mr. Keil exclusive territory rights in seven Maryland counties – Washington, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s – to develop 15 new Potbelly shops in the next eight years. Additionally, Potbelly will refranchise 12 existing restaurant locations as part of the transaction.

Special Olympics Maryland and Lone Oak Farm Brewing Co. Team Up to Raise Over $32K

Olney’s Lone Oak Farm Brewing Company teamed up with Special Olympics Maryland to host the Pint Size Polar Bear Plunge this past Saturday, July 15th from 12:00 to 5:00 pm as a 6-month kickoff to the 2024 MSP Polar Bear Plunge. The family-friendly event raised $32,530 by raffling prizes like Caps Tickets, $500 Cash, an Ocean City Trip, a Deep Creek Dunk Trip, or a TopGolf Package through the “Pint Size Polar Bear Plunge” that allowed supporters to purchase bears for $5 that were randomly plucked from the water on the Lone Oak property to select winners. Detectives Investigate Home Invasion Robbery; Victim Stabbed and Zip-Tied

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a home invasion robbery that occurred on Monday, July 10, 2023, on Key West Avenue in Rockville. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them.  At approximately 1:25 a.m., 1st District officers responded to the location for the report of a home invasion robbery.

The investigation by detectives has revealed the adult male victim parked his vehicle in the parking garage of the apartment complex. When the victim exited his vehicle, the suspects approached him, displayed handguns and announced the robbery. The suspects then stabbed and assaulted the victim and tied his hands behind his back with zip ties. The victim was forced into the suspects’ vehicle. The victim gave the suspects access to his apartment, where they took the safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry before fleeing the scene.

J. Hollinger’s Waterman’s Chophouse in downtown Silver Spring (8606 Colesville Rd) is expanding on its popular Sunday brunch with a new all-you-can-eat buffet that begins this Sunday, July 23rd. The chef-driven chophouse and fresh seafood spot opened in 2022 from Montgomery County restaurateur and caterer Jerry Hollinger, also of The Daily Dish and the Dish & Dram. The restaurant was recently one of two Montgomery County restaurants to make Eater DC’s Essential 38 list.
