Per MCDOT: Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, County Council President Evan Glass, County Councilmembers, County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Director Chris Conklin, other County officials and community groups will congregate at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 9, to mark the completion of the White Flint West Workaround project. The decade-long, $74 million project will support the future development plans of the Pike District in North Bethesda as a public transit-focused epicenter for health computing.

Germantown Grandmother Wins $50,000

The winning grandmother enjoys playing jackpot games and normally purchases both Powerball and Mega Millions tickets, playing her own numbers. However, on Feb. 26 when she went to buy her games, the Lottery self-serve vending machine didn’t let her pick her own numbers and gave her quick-pick tickets. It was that ticket from Wegmans #56 at 20600 Seneca Meadows Parkway in Germantown that won her a $50,000 third-tier prize in the Feb. 27 Powerball drawing.

It wasn’t until the day after the drawing that the lucky lady checked her tickets. She quickly realized she matched four white balls and the red Power Ball for the $50,000 win.

Adventist HealthCare Alternative Care Site in Takoma Park to Decommission by April 28

Admissions to the Adventist HealthCare Alternate Care Site (ACS) in Takoma Park stopped on Monday, February 20, 2023, and current patients, at the time, in the care of the ACS, continued to receive services there until discharge. Adventist HealthCare will decommission the site by April 28.

Per the city of Takoma Park: In May 2020, Adventist HealthCare worked with the state of Maryland to open a COVID-19 Alternate Care Site (ACS), one of five such sites dedicated to caring for those impacted by COVID-19. Since then, the ACS in Takoma Park at the former Washington Adventist Hospital site has played a vital role in recovering more than 4,000 COVID-19 patients and supported hospitals and health facilities in the region during the pandemic’s surges.

Update: Detectives Investigate Bonifant Street Homicide

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday, March 5, 2023, in 900 block of Bonifant St. At approximately 10:17 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the location for a check the welfare call. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male deceased, in a car, with an apparent gunshot wound.

The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy will be conducted to officially determine the cause and manner of death. Currently, there is no suspect in custody. This an active and ongoing investigation. The name of the decedent will be released following proper notification of next-of-kin.

Arts Barn Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Arts Festival Weekend

Olney Theatre Adds Extra Performance of ‘Kinky Boots’ to Benefit LGBTQ+ Organizations

Per the Olney Theatre:  Olney Theatre Center is adding a performance of its hit production of Kinky Boots on Wednesday, March 22 at 8:00 pm and donating proceeds from the evening to two partner organizations. MoCo Pride Center is the latest participant in Olney Theatre’s Community Partners Program, which seeks to deepen the theatre’s connections with local non-profits that are aligned with the theatre’s mission and values. Parasol Patrol was instrumental in the success of Olney Theatre Center’s recent Drag Story Hour event at the Olney branch of the Montgomery County Public Library. More than 100 Parasol Patrol volunteers showed up with rainbow flags and umbrellas to welcome the dozens of families who came to enjoy story hour with Drag Queen D’Manda Martini.

Tickets for the performance are $47-$79 and can be purchased at www.olneytheatre.org or by calling the box office at 301-924-3400. Discounts are available for students, seniors, active military, and first responders. The production is currently running through March 26 in the Mainstage Theatre.

Police Respond to Armed Carjacking in Bethesda; Suspects Abandon Separate Stolen Vehicle at the Scene

Montgomery County Police responded to an armed carjacking on Sunday night. According to MCPD, “On Sunday, March 5, 2023, at approximately 8:15 p.m., MCP officers responded to the 8700 block of Lowell Street for the report of a carjacking. The preliminary investigation has revealed that four armed suspects arrived at the location in a vehicle and approached an adult male victim. The suspects then stole the victim’s vehicle and left the scene in the victim’s vehicle, leaving the vehicle that they arrived in at the scene. Officers determined that the vehicle used by the suspects had been reported stolen. This is an active and ongoing investigation.”

Public safety reporter Cordell Pugh reports that the suspects stole a 2009 Honda Accord and left a stolen Hyundai Elantra at the scene. We will post an update if additional information becomes available.

One Dead After Shooting Sunday Night

One person has died following a shooting Sunday night in Silver Spring. According to Montgomery County Police, “At approximately 10:17 p.m. Third District officers responded to the 900 Block of Bonifant Street for the report of a one down. When officers arrived they located one adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. It was determined the victim succumbed to his injuries. This is an ongoing investigation.” We will post an update or additional information becomes available.
