The Montgomery County Council will meet on Monday, Feb. 6 at 10:15 a.m. with U.S. Senator Ben Cardin to discuss economic development, transportation, public safety and health care, among other priorities.
The Council will meet at 12:30 p.m. to review local and bi-county bills for the 2023 Maryland General Assembly and may choose to take positions on the bills.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on Sunday night in Aspen Hill. According to MCPD, “At approximately 7:37 p.m., officers responded to the area of Georgia Avenue and Hewitt Avenue for the report of a pedestrian struck.
The adult pedestrian, who was struck by a car traveling northbound on Georgia Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained on scene. This is an active and ongoing investigation. The decedent’s name will be released following proper notification of next of kin. A formal news release will be distributed as more information becomes available.”
BooBoo Pho is now open at 19230 Montgomery Village Ave. in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center. The restaurant is currently offering a grand opening special of 15% off orders through March 3. Menu items include spring rolls, Pho (noodle soup), sandwiches, vermicelli bowls, salads, and stir fry. BooBoo Pho is open Monday-Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-7pm.
Last week we reported that the Montgomery Village Center has been sold for $40.25 million according to a report by Maryland Newsletters. Per the report, “Atlantic remained in the deal as the 131,000 square foot center traded from a partnership that included Walton Street Capital and Atlantic, to a new one, headed by Petroleum Marketing Group and, again, Atlantic. The new owners paid $40,250,000.” The shopping center was built in 1969 and is currently undergoing a $20 million renovation. It’s anchored by Aldi and Big Lots, and is home to Ledo Pizza, a recently opened Starbucks, Dollar tree, Advanced Auto parts, and more. Per Seymour, Connecticut Police: On February 1, 2023, following a lengthy and complex investigation by the Seymour Police Department Detective Bureau with assistance from the Gaithersburg Police Department in Maryland, Officers from both Departments arrested the following individual, Charles Ukasanya, for his role in the theft of approximately $375,000 in funds from the Town of Seymour.
Mr. Ukasanya was charged with one count of Larceny in the 1 degree which is a Class B felony. He was taken into custody in Maryland on an extraditable warrant issued by a judge in Milford Superior Court, CT. The court set bond on this warrant is $60,000. Mr. Ukasanya is in custody in Maryland, and will be extradited to Connecticut for prosecution. This investigation into the theft of funds is still active and ongoing at this time.
Program Overview
This 6 week Saturday tennis clinic is designed for middle school players who want to learn and improve their tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment. Players will build confidence on the court while developing strong fundamentals and enjoying the game with other students.
Montgomery County Police responded to a carjacking that occurred Sunday near Westfield Mall in Wheaton. According to MCPD, “At approximately 3:24 p.m., MCPD responded to the 11000 block of Veirs Mill Road for the report of an armed carjacking. There are no suspects in custody and no reports of injury.”

Signage is up for Asian Cuisine and Seafood at 8035 Snouffer School Rd in Gaithersburg, the former site of China King. No additional details about the restaurant are available but construction is currently ongoing in the interior of the building. Asian Cuisine and Seafood will be located between 7-Eleven and El Salvadoran restaurant El Encanto.
China King closed this past June after over 20 years in business. The owners told us that difficulty staffing and pandemic woes helped them to decide it was time to retire. China King was known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and for using high quality fresh ingredients.
MCPS is holding upcoming information sessions on its Electrical Youth Apprenticeship Program, which will enable students to enter the workforce while in high school, earn a salary and gain valuable industry skills. This is a new program open to rising juniors or seniors who are highly motivated and responsible, and able to transport themselves to and from work.
High school juniors/Class of 2023 students accepted into the program will begin 450 hours of on-the-job paid employment with an electrical contractor in July 2022 and the first year of the electrical journeyman coursework at Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) in September. Once registered, apprentices graduate in May 2023, they transition to Years 2-4 of their Journeyman Training and full-time employment.
Purple Line work began this week on the future Silver Spring Library station at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library. Walls and fencing were installed and PurpleLineMD has made it clear that access to the library & businesses on Bonifant St will always be maintained throughout the construction phase (photographs below).
After the first measurable snow in a while last Wednesday (it wasn’t much), cold weather remained in the area until today (Sunday, February 5) when temperatures are expected to reach 50° in the afternoon. Monday and Tuesday are expected to remain in the upper 40/lower 50s before even more of a warm up mid-week.
By the time Wednesday comes around, high temps are expected to reach the low 60s– unseasonably warm for early February. A little moisture is expected to move into the area towards the end of the week, with rain possible Thursday and Friday while high temperatures remain in upper 50s/lower 60s before a cool down going into the weekend.
Arts on the Green in presents the 10th Annual Juried Membership Exhibition of the Art League of Germantown (ALOG). The exhibit is on display through April 16, 2023 At the Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg.
As part of this special exhibition, a multidiscipline workshop, Blooms & Beyond: Beginner’s Guide to Paper Flowers, will be held on Saturday, February 4 from 10:30 am to noon. Bill Mapes, ALOG’s Special Show Coordinator & Jaree Donnelly, the City’s Gallery Program Coordinator & a long-time art instructor, will share their insights about some of their favorite floral pieces from the exhibition. Jaree will share basic techniques on how to bring art to life with an introductory paper flowers craft class. All materials to create a card featuring paper flowers is included.
Hope Grows Child Development Center has selected Fox Chapel Shopping Center as the children’s daycare and educational facility’s third location in the Montgomery County, Maryland region. Founded and owned by Salema Horn, the group signed a lease with Fox Chapel, LLC for 10,803 square feet of space within the 115,000 square foot neighborhood shopping center positioned at 19721 North Frederick Road in Germantown. Craig Kates, Director of Tenant Advisory Services for Edge, represented the tenant and Susan Bourgeois of The Rappaport Companies was involved in negotiations on behalf of the landlord.
