Gardens: Winter is the perfect time to learn about the bones of a botanical garden without the distraction of leaves or flowers. Explore architectural elements that shape the Brookside Gardens during its Winter Tour(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, January 28, at 10 am. This event is for adults eighteen and older only.
Montgomery County Police responded to an armed carjacking that occurred last night in front of the Chick-Fil-A located at 825 Ellsworth Dr in Silver Spring. According to MCPD, “at approximately 7:18 p.m., officers responded to the location for the report of a strong-arm carjacking. Three black males approached the victim, who was sitting in his 2012 Black Honda Civic (MD Tag #1CX1353), pulled him out the car and drove away. The victim sustained minor injuries. No suspects are in custody at this time.” We will post an update when additional information is available.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 37-Year-Old Jason Rollins, unknown address, with the bank robbery that occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at the Bank of America in the 400 block of N. Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg.
On Wednesday, January 18, 2023, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Rollins, charging him with first-degree assault and armed robbery related charges. On Thursday, January 19, 2023, Rollins was apprehended at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg and then transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he is being held without bond.

Step into a weekend where culture, creativity, entrepreneurship, and community come alive.
The panel will cover topics including the economics of affordable housing, market rate housing and a discussion surrounding rent burden and rent relief. Panelists will include leaders from County agencies, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), nonprofits, including AHC, Montgomery Housing Partnership, Renters Alliance and PolicyLink, and the private sector, including Stonebridge Real Estate, EYA, Southern Management Companies and the Small Multifamily Owners Association.
The members of the PH Committee aim to connect data, context and conversation with a variety of stakeholders to guide future policymaking around the affordability of rental housing. The committee plans to subsequently delve into additional critical housing matters, including home ownership programs, and the Housing Initiative Fund and Housing Production Fund, the county’s primary financing vehicles to subsidize affordable housing projects.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to three separate collisions involving pedestrians, all before 8am, on Thursday, January 26. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer:

The League of Educators for Asian American Progress (LEAPP) is offering $2,000 scholarships to graduating MCPS seniors of Asian descent. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 1. Applicants must be planning to major in education, and show experience supporting the Asian American community and/or organizations. Apply here.
Earlier this month during its annual Lunar New Year banquet celebration, LEAAP raised more than $14,000 for the scholarship fund. See a few pictures from the event. The event featured the traditional lion dance and guest speakers– Brookhaven Elementary special education teacher Becky Corey and Sligo Middle teacher Orchid Dargahi, past scholarship recipients. Last June Philz Coffee closed its Bethesda location, located at 7247 Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda. Philz Coffee opened its Bethesda location in December of 2018. At the time, DC Area locations in Adams Morgan, Navy Yard, and Ballston remaine open, but have since closed. On Tuesday, the company tweeted that it would be exiting the DC market:
“As we look to the future, we have made the difficult decision to exit the DC Metro market. We loved serving this community, but business conditions and our desire to provide the best possible experience to our customers led to our decision. Thank you all for the years of support.”
MCPS students, parents and staff at Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary School, in Germantown, ushered in the Lunar New Year in grand style with their annual show and celebration on January 20. From traditional dances to vibrant costumes, students from all backgrounds celebrated Asian culture and traditions.
Students performed traditional Chinese and Vietnamese dances; sang; showed off martial arts moves; showcased a kids’ game; and played the flute, gourd flute and erhu, traditional Chinese instruments. Check out a photo gallery from the event. Courtesy of MCPS.
“Downtown Brew’s” at 5751 Fishers Lane in Rockville is scheduled to hold its soft opening today (Thursday, January 26th), located at the former site of Downtown Beer and Wine. The soft opening takes place at 6pm.
According to the store, “We have on and off premise service so people can come here and enjoy a glass of wine and beer or take them with them.” “Downtown Brew’s” will also offer beer and wine home delivery services and plans to eventually offer charcuteries, gourmet toast and coffee. According to the highlight tabs on its social media, additional information, including hours of operation, will be available via the @dtbrews Instagram account, soon.
Per MCPS: Gary Frace, Springbrook High School’s longtime cross country coach, was named state Cross Country Coach of the Year by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).
Frace has been at Springbrook for nearly 50 years.
