MoCo History

Per MCPL: For most of the 1960s and 70s, Gaithersburg was an entertainment mecca for the greater DC area. Shady Grove Music Fair—first under a big-top tent and then in a theater-in-the-round venue complete with a revolving stage—hosted Broadway hits and a wide variety of pop, rock and soul singers. Stars included Simon and Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Duke Ellington and even the Jackson 5 for a full week with tickets starting at an unbelievable $4.75. After only 16 years, the curtain came down for the last time in 1978—but what an amazing run!

Our popular speaker, Ralph Buglass, is a member of the Montgomery County Speaker Bureau and an avid history buff. With Peerless Rockville, he is co-author of Images of America: Rockville, a pictorial history of the city’s 250 years.  Buglass has taught at lifelong learning institutes associated with Johns Hopkins and American universities and Montgomery College.

At one point Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, ate pizza every day for two years while getting his “One Bite” pizza reviews started on Instagram and YouTube. Through the years, he has eaten pizza from various restaurants across the country– providing a 1-10 rating for each slice. While most of his reviews come from pizza places in Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey, he recently tried a New York City Ledo Pizza location (video below).

“It’s good…you’d have to put it in a chain if it has over 100 locations, it’s pretty good for that type of pizza.” Portnoy said of the “Maryland style pizza”, referencing the amount of stores Ledo Pizza has grown to in recent years. He gave it a 6.7, which puts it towards the middle of the pack of the over 1,000 pizza places he has reviewed so far.

Maryland Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has become the school’s all-time leader in career touchdown passes, getting his 50th touchdown as a Terp against Rutgers earlier today. Tagovailoa completed 25-of-37 for 342 yards and one touchdown. He broke the record of 49 previously held by Scott Milanovich.

Tagovailoa is now ahead of successful Maryland quarterbacks like Boomer Esiason, Frank Reich, Stan Gelbaugh, Neil O’Donnell, Scott Zolak, and Scott Milanovich with his 50 touchdowns. The Terps, who finished the regular season at 7-5, reaching  seven regular-season wins for the first time since 2014, will find out what bowl they’ll be playing in on December 4th.

In February, MDTA started a civil penalty waiver grace period for tolls paid in full and has ceased referring toll bills to the Central Collection Unit (CCU) and MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) temporarily. While it seems like it has lasted forever, the grace period will end at 11:59 p.m. on November 30, 2022, and the MDTA will resume referrals of unpaid toll bills and civil penalties to CCU and MDOT MVA on December 1.

If you have unpaid Video Tolls and/or Civil Penalties, the MDTA will waive the Civil Penalties if your toll balance is paid in full between Feb. 24 and 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2022. After the grace period ends, customers will remain responsible for all unpaid tolls and civil penalties and referrals will resume.
