According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, Maryland’s six casinos combined to generate $155,150,298 in revenue from slot machines and table games during February 2025, a decrease of $4,076,380 (-2.6%) compared to February 2024. Casino gaming contributions to the state during February 2025 totaled $65,225,418, a decrease of $2,569,575 (-3.8%) compared to February 2024. The February 2025 contributions included $47,094,585 to the Education Trust Fund, a decrease of $1,808,122 (-3.7%) compared to February 2024. (more…)


Crime

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has arrested and charged 36-year-old Terron Christopher Matasaran of Bladensburg, MD with second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in connection with the death of a 7-month-old infant. The arrest follows an autopsy ruling the infant’s death as a homicide, with investigators determining the child suffered a head injury and rib fractures while under Matasaran’s care.

The acquisition will retain more than 500 jobs and marks Samsung Biologics’ first U.S.-based manufacturing site, further cementing Montgomery County’s position as a premier destination for life sciences companies of all sizes. “During our international trade mission last year, we met with the Samsung Biologics team in Seoul to discuss the economic momentum in Maryland. Today’s ribbon cutting is the realization of that meeting and our state’s momentum,” said Maryland Governor Wes Moore. “South Korea’s largest biotech company is opening its first U.S. manufacturing facility here in Maryland. In the state of Maryland, we are delivering for our people and not playing for second.”

Last October, biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, headquartered in Gaithersburg since 2013, announced that it will build another state-of-the art facility, also in Gaithersburg. This new facility, which follows the opening of the company’s $300 million cell therapy manufacturing facility opened in Rockville last spring, will create 100 new jobs and continue to expand the company’s R&D footprint in the County. Ben & Jerry’s will host its annual Free Cone Day on April 8, offering free scoops at participating Scoop Shops worldwide as a gesture of gratitude to its fans. The tradition, which began in 1979, has grown into a global event spanning over 35 countries, with last year’s celebration serving more than 1 million scoops. (more…)

Maryland

Governor Wes Moore testified before Maryland legislative committees in support of the DECADE Act and the Housing for Jobs Act, key components of his administration’s 2025 Economic Growth Agenda. MCDOT

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has announced that a new traffic signal at Woodward High School, located on Old Georgetown Rd. in North Bethesda, is set to enter mandatory 72-hour flash operation on or around Monday, March 10, 2025. Following this initial phase, the signal will transition to full-color activation on or about Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Montgomery Parks

Montgomery Parks will be conducting prescribed fires at River Road Shale Barrens Conservation Park (Poolesville) and Serpentine Barrens Conservation Park (Potomac) in early to mid-March 2025 to help restore the parks’ native habitats and better support natural ecosystems.
