MCPS recently shared the news of Maya Mourshed, a student at Francis Scott Key Middle School in Silver Spring, who not only shines in STEM subjects but also expresses her passion for science through her writing as a young author. Mourshed recently published her debut book, Chemistories, where she melds her fascination with science and storytelling.

MCPS announced on Friday, December 13th that La Faye Howard, assistant principal at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, has been honored as the 2025 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Howard will now advance to compete for national recognition.

People’s Book is excited to announce that New York Times bestselling author, Lisa See, will be at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center (7995 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910) for a lively talk on June 16 at 7PM, with doors open at 6 PM. Tickets are on sale now.

A $10 ticket gains you entry, but a $40 ticket ensures you have a copy of this new historical novel to pick up at the venue. Purchase of Daughters of the Sun and Moon from People’s Book is required to enter the book signing line at the end of the talk.


Event

In partnership with Colony Grill, come to Cabin John Village for free outdoor movies every second Friday of the month from May-October. Kids activities start at 6:30 PM with face painting and balloon twisting. All movies begin at sunset!

DMV

For the first time in 15 years, Metro trains will operate in automatic mode, a move that allows the system to operate as it was originally designed. Automatic Train Operation (ATO) controls the trains’ acceleration, deceleration, and speed while being regulated by safety critical equipment.

Beyond MoCo

Last year, Tyson’s Corner Center (1961 Chain Bridge Rd., Tysons, VA) in nearby Northern Virginia added a “twist” to your shopping experience by allowing customers to sip on their favorite alcoholic beverage while strolling throughout the mall. We stopped by for some holiday shopping and spoke with participating restaurants and customers about how it’s going.
