Nearly 20 years after closing the last CHI-CHI’S™ restaurant location, the popular Mexican restaurant chain is set to make a comeback thanks to a new agreement with Hormel Foods, owner of CHI-CHI’S™ trademarks. The deal grants Michael McDermott, son of CHI-CHI’S™ founder, use of the CHI-CHI’S™ name on physical restaurant locations which are expected to open in 2025. Locations for the upcoming restaurants have not been revealed, but the nationwide chain previously had two local restaurants right here in Montgomery County.

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council elected Kate Stewart as president and Will Jawando as vice president, highlighting Stewart’s focus on climate, transportation, housing, and mental health initiatives, while Jawando prioritizes education, housing affordability, and equity. Escape the Bookshop games are always based on a real crime with connections to the DC region. They are designed and built by HouseMouse Books to be played in our atmospheric bookshop. This latest game was inspired by a true local museum theft and the goal is simple – to find the stolen object before the suspect flees the country!

Montgomery County Police have arrested Thanh Phan, 71, and Jose Saravia Gonzalez, 27, both of Silver Spring, on charges of criminally negligent manslaughter by vehicle related to a fatal pedestrian collision on April 5, 2024, that claimed the life of 52-year-old Ron Franzese.

Maryland

Coach Allie Coyle became the first woman to coach a Maryland boys’ soccer team to a State Championship when Blair defeated Richard Montgomery 1-0 last month (see video below). On Monday, ESPN W highlighted Coyle’s accomplishment in a social media post that has received over 46k likes in 18 hours.

Beyond MoCo

A joint operation by the Maryland Car Rally Task Force and partner law enforcement agencies dismantled ten illegal car rallies across Maryland, arrested five individuals (including four juveniles), recovered stolen vehicles, seized firearms, and charged one adult with multiple traffic offenses during a large-scale enforcement effort on November 30, 2024.
