Winter Weather Advisory in Effect East of I-95 Corridor; Chance of Winter Weather on Friday (and a Pencil Prediction for Wednesday, 1/5)

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for areas near/east of the I-95 corridor for possible freezing rain between 4am and 9am tomorrow.

As of now, none of MoCo is under this advisory, but all of neighboring Prince George’s County is. A Special Weather Statement has been issued for MoCo.

Per the National Weather Service for areas under the advisory:

WHAT…A light glaze of ice from freezing rain.

WHERE…Portions of central, northeastern and southern Maryland.

WHEN…From 4 AM to 9 AM EST Wednesday.

IMPACTS…The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Slow down and use caution while traveling. When venturing outside, watch your first few steps taken on steps, sidewalks, and driveways, which could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.

The Special Weather Statement for MoCo:

There is potential for hazardous commuting conditions for the Wednesday morning commute. A period of light freezing rain is possible (30-50% chance) Wednesday morning across the Baltimore/Washington Metro areas with a light glaze of ice possible on area roads.

It this threat does materialize during the Wednesday morning rush-hour, many roads could quickly run icy. This could lead to dangerous travel conditions, multiple accidents, and extensive delays.

Earlier today, the National Weather Service upped its Day 3 Winter Storm Threat to ‘high confidence’ for Friday. As of now there is potential for something light (1-3 inches) on Friday morning, but we will see how it looks tomorrow before going into more detail.

Pencil Prediction for Wednesday, 1/5/22:

With some sidewalks and even neighborhood streets in southern MoCo still icy, and the possibility of freezing rain in the morning, I’m going to have to give this one a light 2 pencils.
