MoCoSnow

Thursday Afternoon Update for Early Friday Snow (with Pencil Prediction)

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect, and has been extended to last from 9pm tonight until 7am tomorrow morning, for a fast-moving system that’ll likely bring us some snow early Friday morning.

Latest guidance is showing a little less snow coming our way than what we saw coming last night and early this morning

Per the National Weather Service:

* WHAT…Snow. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches. Isolated high amounts up to 6 inches are possible.

* WHERE…The Washington and Baltimore Metropolitan areas, portions of central and southern Maryland, and portions northern Virginia.

* WHEN…From 9 PM this evening to 5 AM EST Friday.

* IMPACTS…Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…The heaviest snow is expected between 1 AM and 4 AM when snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour are possible.

Visibility will be reduced to near or less than one- half mile snow.

Per the most recent NWS map, MoCo is now expected to get between 2-3” of well-timed snow when it comes to disrupting the morning commute.

The National Weather Service also provides map that show the ”percent chance that snow amounts will be greater than…”

For MoCo (range is due to different percentages for different parts of the county):

% chance of over 1 inch of snow: 93-99%

% chance of over 2 inches of snow: 69-80%

% chance of over 4 inches of snow: 5-9%

Snow could move into the area just before midnight and should be gone prior to sunrise. The cold ground will allow for snow to stick immediately and there could be areas that get bursts of heavy snow while other areas are in more of a dry slot.

The reasonable worst case scenario map shows some of MoCo in the 5-8” range.

The blend of inclement weather, even if it is on the lighter side, along with everything else going on leads me to believe that the weekend may start early for many school systems.
