Calverton

Back in October we let you know that Giant Food signed on to open at the Orchard Center on Cherry Hill Rd in Calverton. The Landover-based grocery announced it signed a 20-year lease with MCB Real Estate for a 64,626-square-foot building to open a new grocery store location at the former ShopRite space at 12028 Cherry Hill Rd. ShopRite closed back in February of 2021after Aldi opened in the shopping center in October of 2020. The grocery store has announced that it will open on Friday, August 5th at 6am. Nearby location at 11701 Beltsville Drive in the Calverton Shopping Center (located in Prince George’s County) will be closing permanently at midnight on Thursday, August 4th.

Giant operates 164 supermarkets in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia with about 20,000 associates. Included within the 164 stores are 152 full-service pharmacies, 82 full-service PNC Banks and 24 Starbucks locations. This will be the 21st Giant Food location in Montgomery County.


Wheaton

After purchasing a $6 quick-pick ticket at Wheaton Winery, the Burtonsville resident waited for the drawing to take place later that evening. The 52-year-old saw that the game’s top-prize winning numbers of 10, 13, 16, 29 and 31 appeared on the first line of her lucky ticket.

Her Lottery retailer, Wheaton Winery, will also benefit from selling the $50,000 top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket. The Montgomery County business located at 2211 University Boulevard in Silver Spring will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery. The Lottery has sold 26 $50,000 winning Bonus Match 5 tickets already this year.


I-495

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a vehicle fire that occurred just past Old Georgetown Rd on the outer loop of I-495 on Sunday around 2pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the vehicle was located in the middle lanes of the highway and was “well involved” when firefighters arrived.  As of 4pm, all lanes have reopened.

Rockville

Private property owners can play an important role in reducing pollution and flooding, and creating wildlife habitat by installing small-scale stormwater projects.

Single-family homeowners and nonprofits, including religious institutions, private schools, homeowners associations and condominium associations, can receive up to a lifetime maximum of $2,500 in rebates for the approved projects below.


Montgomery Village

Around 4,000 residents in Montgomery Village are currently without power after a transformer blew up this morning around 9am at the intersection of Watkins Mill Rd and Stedwick Rd.

Pepco is currently at the scene and are estimating that power could be restored to most customers by noon. No injuries from the explosion have been reported. We will post an update when more information becomes available. Per Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS: “Update – Gaithersburg, MD IAO Watkins Mill Road & Stedwick Road @PepcoConnect on scene & report ~4K customers out of power.”


Bethesda

Lazzaro’s Authentic Italian Deli opened in the Montgomery Mall Food Court back in May, in the space previously  occupied by Big Al’s Sub Shop. Earlier this week the stall in the food court was closed and mostly cleared out and Google listed the restaurant as permanently closed.

Early this morning there was confirmation that the food court location has closed, but hope of a reopening in a brick and mortar locations, when owner Larry Lazarro wrote the following in response to a post on the Support MoCo FB page: “Thank you for all you and everyone has done on this page. Business was great and so was the feedback. It was a personal family health matter. But this is not the end I’m looking to move into a brick/ mortar. This place fell into my lap. Goin into the mall was never my first choice. lol Thank you to everyone we’ll miss seeing your beautiful faces every day! We love you and appreciate what everyone has done for us in this group! And the family is doing fine now.


Beyond MoCo

U.S. News & World Report released its ‘15 Richest Counties in the U.S.’ list last week and it included five counties located in the DMV area. The list includes just one Maryland jurisdiction, Howard County, and four counties located in Northern Virginia. Montgomery County, which is not included in this list, has come in just outside of the “Top 15” in other lists from recent years, including 18th on Forbes and Fox Business.

The list ranks the 15 richest counties or county equivalents by median household income, according to American Community Survey estimates for 2016-2020. Per the list, “According to the latest five-year estimates, a total of 49 counties had median household incomes that were above $100,000. Of the 15 counties with the highest incomes, five are located in Virginia or Maryland, near the nation’s capital. Four counties are located in California – all in the San Francisco Bay Area – and another four are in New Jersey or New York.


Crime

During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the suspect, 32-year-old Bryant Whack, had been inside the deli panhandling, when he allegedly stole a tip jar from the counter and walked out. The victim, an employee of the café, followed Whack outside and confronted him. Whack sprayed the victim with pepper spray, stabbed the victim and then left the location. A lookout was placed with a description of Whack.


Arts

Selected artists will have the opportunity to display their artwork from October through March.

A panel of jurors will review the applications received during the call & select the artists for the upcoming year. The criteria for review includes the originality & technical achievement in the medium and the type & price of work appropriate for the Arts Barn’s typical patron.
