Montgomery County Launches Maryland’s First ‘EV Purchasing Co-op Dealership Incentive Program’ to Share Information and Reduce Cost of Buying Electric Vehicles

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be helping residents find discounts on electric vehicles (EVs) with the launch of its new “EV Purchasing Co-op Dealership Incentives” web page. The program is the first in Maryland where a local jurisdiction is partnering directly with local automobile dealerships to provide incentives and discounts for EV purchases.

The program will amplify limited-time promotions and discounts on battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The initiative is the cornerstone of the next phase of the County’s EV Purchasing Co-op and will make the benefits of EVs more accessible by helping residents reduce the cost of going electric.

New Pakistani Restaurant Now Open

Zaiqa BBQ & Karahi is now open at 12945 Wisteria Dr in Germantown, the former site of Eastern Kabobs. The owners took over the location in September and have since remodeled the dining room and created a new menu with a new head chef. Zaiqa tells us they specialize in authentic Pakistani cuisine, which they say is not readily available in the area. Menu items include the Chicken Shinwari Karahi, “a traditional Peshawari delicacy, chicken cooked with black pepper, tomatoes, and green chilies on a high flame, garnished with fresh coriander leaves and ginger” as well as a variety of Biryani and Kebab dishes.

Police Investigating Death of Man Found Unresponsive in Yard of Residence in Olney

Per our public safety reporter, Cordell Pugh, At approximately 3:10PM on Tuesday on Heritage Hills Drive, just West of Georgia Avenue (Montgomery County, MD), a male was found unresponsive in the yard of a residence and was pronounced dead on scene. Montgomery County Police working to determine circumstances of death.

Four Police Cruisers Struck by Impaired Drivers Over the Past Five Weeks

Per MCPD: Over the past five weeks, four police cruisers have been hit while conducting police related activities. In each case, it was determined that the drivers of the striking vehicles were impaired. On Sunday, November 13, 2022, at approximately 12:24 a.m., a Gaithersburg Police officer, assigned to the Holiday Task Force, was outside of his cruiser conducting a traffic stop in the area of northbound I-270 and Montgomery Village Ave., when his cruiser was side swiped by a red 2021 Ford Explorer. Following the collision, it was determined the driver of the Explorer was under the influence.

On Sunday, November 20, 2022, at approximately 1:38 a.m., a Maryland State Police Trooper, assigned to the Holiday Task Force, was initiating a traffic stop, in the area of northbound I-270 and Middlebrook Rd., with all emergency lights and sirens activated, when his cruiser was sideswiped by a 2011 Nissan Maxima, in the travel lanes of the roadway. The officer attempted to stop the Nissan Maxima, but the driver did not immediately come to a stop. When the driver stopped a short distance later, it was determined that the driver was under the influence.

Detectives From Special Investigations Unit are Asking For Public’s Assistance in Locating Missing 15-Year Old; Possibly With Infant Twin Boys

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 15-year-old from Gaithersburg. Yaquelin Suleyma Hernandez Ramirez was last seen on the morning of Sunday, December 10, 2022, at her residence in the 400 block of Muddy Branch Rd. in Gaithersburg. She may in company of her twin infant boys.

Hernandez is approximately 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. Police and family are concerned for her welfare. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Yaquelin Suleyma Hernandez Ramirez is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line) or the Special Victims Investigations Division at (240) 773-5400. Callers may remain anonymous.

Two Dogs Rescued and Resuscitated After Postal Worker Calls 9-1-1 Tuesday Morning

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a fire in Kensington when a postal worker called 9-1-1 after smelling smoke and hearing fire alarms going off in a home on Dewey Rd Tuesday morning, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Per Piringer, there were no humans home at the time of the fire, but crews found two unconscious dogs that they were able to resuscitate and take to a nearby vet. Unfortunately, three cats did not survive the fire. There was approximately $75K in damages to the home.

Christmas & New Year’s Holiday Closure & Recycling Notices for the City of Gaithersburg

Recycling will take place as scheduled on December 26, 2022 & January 2, 2023. Loose leaf collection concludes on December 30. Recycling includes newspaper, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard & commingled materials (which should be separated from brush, branches, grass clippings, leaves & other yard trimmings) picked up by the City’s contractor.

On-demand bulk pick up for residents whose regular recycling days are December 26 & January 2 will be unavailable. Appointments can be made for the following week using the online form, by e-mailing [email protected], or by calling 301-258-6370.

Tuesday Morning Update on Potential Winter Weather Thursday Morning

We are now under 48 hours away from potential winter weather on Thursday morning. As it looks now, there’s still the possibility of freezing rain on Thursday that could affect the morning commute. The image below, courtesy of ABC7’s Eileen Whelan, shows that most of MoCo could be impacted by ice in the morning with temperatures in Gaithersburg at 31° at 7am.

This seems to be the general consensus among local meteorologists, with NBC4’s Chuck Bell also sharing a hi-res forecast model (seen below) that has freezing rain still in our area at 8am.

Prizes of up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. The Montgomery County resident made a stop at Latino Market & Jewelry in Silver Spring. When he realized he won, “I was very happy,” the player said. He told Lottery officials that he plans to use his winnings to pay off loans. His lucky retailer located at 2505 Ennalls Avenue will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for its role in selling a top-prize winning scratch-off worth $100,000. This instant ticket was launched in September 2020. There are still eight $100,000 top prizes remaining along with more than 82,000 other prizes ranging from $30 to $5,000.
