A couple weeks back we let you know that Doki Toki, a dessert shop that will offer Japanese desserts, including ice cream, mochi donuts, milk tea, and a “lot of other desserts”, will be opening in Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown neighborhood. Last week signage went up, and we have been told that the dessert spot will be opening on Friday, May 20th.

Doki Toki Dessert Shop is taking over the location formerly occupied by Mango Mango at 202 Ellington Blvd next to Burger IM. Mango Mango was an Asian dessert spot that opened its first restaurant in New York’s Chinatown in 2013 and served traditional Hong Kong style sweet soup dessert, modern fusion sweets, and pastries. It was in the location from October 2019 until April 2021. Below you’ll see a few pictures of the redesigned interior.

With COVID-19 Cases Rising Again, County Recommends Precautionary Measures to Protect Against Greater Community Spread of Virus

“Our current surge in cases is lasting longer than expected, which leaves more people at-risk of being exposed to COVID-19,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “I encourage everyone to wear masks indoors in public spaces when possible as well as continue to use our ample testing and vaccination resources we have in the County. I know we are all tired of this virus, but the virus is not tired of us. If we keep doing our individual parts, as a community, we can tamp down this increase in the case rate and avoid going back to days of more restrictive measures.”

The County’s COVID-19 case rate has risen steadily over the last month and is now more than triple the recent low on March 15. Although the County is currently an area of low-level community transmission as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the case rate is quickly approaching medium-level community transmission. While there has not been a commensurate increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the County, there is concern about the impact that spring break travel and holiday gatherings may have on transmission.

Heat Index Could Reach 100° Friday and Saturday

As always, our area has been on a weather roller coaster this spring with recent highs in the 50s, 80s, and everything in between. Coming off of a sever weather threat, high temperatures should remain between the mid 70s and low 80s for the next three days, but Friday and Saturday will be unseasonably warm.

Today (Tuesday) we are expecting a mostly sunny and warm day with temperatures reaching near 80° and feeling about 85. Tomorrow (Wednesday) will bring us a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures reaching the mid-70s. Thursday will likely start off cloudy and warm with showers possible and temperatures reaching the low 80s.

D.C. Metro Area Named 2nd Best Summer Travel Destination in 2022 by WalletHub

With nearly 80% of American travelers planning trips during 2022, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best Summer Travel Destinations and the D.C. Metro area has come in 2nd place behind Orlando, Florida.

To help travelers plan the perfect summer getaway, WalletHub compared 100 metro areas across 43 key indicators of budget- and fun-friendliness. The data set ranges from the cost of the cheapest flight to the number of attractions to COVID-19 cases.

HomeSense Announces Opening Date in Rockville

Last week we reported that signage was up at the upcoming Homesense at 12013 Rockville Pike in Rockville, the former site of A.C. Moore. Now we know the discount home furnishing store will be opening on Thursday, June 16th, according to the Homesense website. The store will be open from 8am until 10pm on opening day.

Homesense is owned by the same company that owns HomeGoods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx. Cosmopolitan magazine describes Homesense as “HomeGoods on steroids.” The chain sells furniture, rugs, lighting, kitchenware, home décor, and books.

D.C. Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges for Committing an Armed Robbery and Armed Carjacking in Montgomery County

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland: Rashaun Onley, age 22, of Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty today to federal charges of committing an armed commercial robbery, carjacking, and using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Sobocinski of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office; Chief Robert J. Contee III of the Metropolitan Police Department; Chief Marcus Jones of the Montgomery County Police Department; Chief Malik Aziz of the Prince George’s County Police Department; Chief Don Hayes of the City of Alexandria, Virginia Police Department; Chief Charles “Andy” Penn of the Arlington County, Virginia Police Department; and Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy; and Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy.

Metro GM’s Retirement Effective Immediately Following News of Recertification Lapse

Paul J. Wiedefeld originally announced his retirement in January, effective June 30. According to DCist, his salary was $527,000, which was over $125,000 more than the next best-paid transit CEO. His replacement, Randy Clarke, will start on July 1st, at a salary of $485,000. Andy Off will be the interim GM/CEO in this transitional period.

Authentic French Bakery, Boulangerie Christophe, Is Now Open in Cabin John Village

Just over five years after opening its first location in Georgetown, Boulangerie Chritophe has opened its first Montgomery County. The bakery is located in a new building in Cabin John Village.

The first location, in Georgetown, opened in February of 2017. At the time of its opening, the first floor of that location is a casual cafe, serving light lunch fare and a wide selection of pastries. The second floor of Boulangerie Christophe was more — and offered can enjoy a sit-down meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

Additional Information Regarding Seventeen-Year-Old Charged in Connection With Death of Germantown Teen, Jai’Lyn Jones

A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Jai’Lyn Jones. On Monday, January 24, 2022, the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a call for a male body found in a wooded area. Officers from the 5th District responded and located 17-year-old Jailyn Jones in the 18900 block of Grotto Lane in Germantown. An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Jones’ death a homicide.

The Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide Unit has been actively investigating Jones’ death and during the course of the investigation, physical evidence was recovered connecting Ta’Quawn Deon Henderson of Germantown, to the homicide. Detectives also learned that Henderson and Jones were acquaintances. Both attended Northwest High School.

17-Year-Old Arrested in Connection to Murder of Jai’Lyn Jones in Germantown

A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Jai’lyn Jones, according to Montgomery County Police. MCPD Chief Marcus Jones and Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy will hold a press conference today at 4pm where they will share information regarding the investigation and arrest.
