According to a report by Mike Conroy of the Montgomery Village News, District 39 Senator Nancy King provided an update on the recently finished Legislative Session, and her success in securing bond funds for the community. Per the report, Senator King, who is also a long-time Village resident, noted she was grateful for the partnership she has with MVF staff and was thrilled to bring the funds to Montgomery Village.

“Senator King said after the Federal stimulus and a new tax on online purchases, the state was able to extend significantly more bond funds than in previous years. As such, she was able to secure $2.5 million in state bond monies for projects in Montgomery Village.

Montgomery County Police Continue to Investigate 2001 Homicide of Leslie Preer

On Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at approximately 11:47 a.m., Montgomery County Police Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 4800 block of Drummond Avenue in Chevy Chase for the report of a suspicious situation. When Leslie Preer did not show up to work in the morning of May 2, 2001, her employer contacted her family members to check her welfare. Leslie’s employer and her husband responded to Leslie’s residence, where they discovered a suspicious scene. Leslie was located deceased inside of the residence with apparent trauma to her body.

Leslie Preer’s murder is an ongoing homicide investigation. The department urges anyone who has any information about this homicide to call the Major Crimes Division – Cold Case Unit at 240-773-5070 or 240-773-TIPS, or contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect(s). Callers can remain anonymous.

Washington Commanders Announce the Return of the Marching Band for the 2022 NFL Season and a “Revamped Arrangement of the Fight Song”

The Washington Commanders have announced that the team will be bringing back the marching band along with a “revamped arrangement of the team’s fight song.” Per the Commanders: Building on 85 years of tradition, and with the team’s first-ever Music Director at the helm, the 2022 Commanders Marching Band will combine old and new traditions as the team heads into the inaugural season of the Washington Commanders. Interested musicians who believe they have the ability to take the field with the 2022 Commanders Marching Band can submit video auditions through May 23, 2022.

Today the Washington Commanders announce the official return of the marching band for the 2022 season with an open invitation for musicians in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area to audition to be part of the inaugural Commanders Marching Band. The 60-person ensemble will feature musicians from across the DMV and will be composed of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, and debut at the Commanders Training Camp this summer.

Detectives Investigate Pharmacy Shooting

At approximately 9:31 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the CVS Pharmacy in the 12300 block of Georgia Avenue for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Upon arrival, detectives determined that an unknown female suspect entered the CVS Pharmacy and began placing property belonging to the store in her bag. When the suspect attempted to exit the store, an employee tried to stop her by standing in front of the exterior sliding glass exit door. At that time, an unknown male suspect approached the door the employee was attempting to block and fired a handgun into the bottom panel.

The employee then allowed the female suspect to pass, and both the female and male suspect fled the scene with the stolen property.

Councilmember Requests Lowering Speed Limit on Tuckerman Lane After Fatal Collision Involving Jogger

On April 28, 74-year-old Eric Grosse died as a result of his injuries after being struck by a driver in an SUV while crossing the intersection of Tuckerman Lane and Kings Riding Way in Bethesda. Grosse was a part time professor at Montgomery College in Rockville and served on the White Downtown Advisory Committee, Friends of White Flint, and Western Montgomery Citizens Advisory boards. Montgomery County Councilmember Andrew Friedson described Grosse as a dedicated teacher, local advocate, and public servant that was passionate and enthusiastic about education and serving his community.

The April 28 collision that involved Grosse is currently under investigation by Montgomery County’s Collision Reconstruction Unit. According to a police report, the investigation by detectives determined that the pedestrian was jogging across southbound Tuckerman Lane, in the crosswalk. For reasons still under investigation, the operator of a 2019 Subaru Forester, who was traveling westbound on Tuckerman Lane, struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk. This crosswalk is equipped with a push-to-activate pedestrian signal. Detectives are investigating whether the signal was activated. The adult male driver of the Subaru remained on scene.

Butter Me Up is Now Open in Montgomery Mall

Back in December we let you know that DC’s Butter Me Up will be opening a Montgomery County location in Westfield’s Montgomery Mall. The wait is over, as the location opened yesterday according to mall security. Butter Me Up has taken over the old Aroma Espresso Bar location, which is downstairs near the Old Navy entrance.

The breakfast spot, which features “instagrammable” decor, will offer a menu that consists of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices. A Yelp article named Butter Me Up DC’s best breakfast sandwich, as the restaurant’s first location can be found within HalfSmoke in Florida Ave NW.

Council Vice President Evan Glass Requests Additional Funding for Expanded Access to Abortions for Montgomery County Residents

On Sunday night, Politico reported that the Supreme Court would be voting to strike down Roe v. Wade, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito. On Wednesday, Council Vice President Evan Glass sent the following letter to County Marc Elrich requesting expanded access to abortions to Montgomery County residents.

Rockville Juvenile Arrested for Arson

A Rockville juvenile has been arrested and charged with 2nd degree arson and 1st degree malicious burning after an extensive investigation connected the individual to a fire that occurred on October 21, according to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer. The fire occurred at an unoccupied commercial building that was undergoing construction/renovations on the 2300blk of Wootton Parkway near Hurley Ave in Rockville.

First responders were initially dispatched for a transformer fire and when firefighters arrived they found fire coming from the loading dock of the building. The fire was knocked down and no injuries were reported.

County Executive Elrich Urges Residents to Recognize ‘National Correctional Officers and Employees Appreciation Week’

“The last few years have been really hard on our correctional officers and employees,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “They have remained very focused on doing their jobs and committed to keeping themselves and the residents of our jails safe. And this was before we had vaccinations. I appreciate them for their diligence and they continue to play a key role in keeping our County safe. I ask the people of Montgomery County to join me in saluting the officers and employees of MCDCR during National Correctional Officers and Employees Week and encourage everyone to acknowledge what they do to ensure the safety and welfare of our community.”

National Correctional Officer and Employees Week is designed to redefine correctional officers and employees and highlight how their work can change lives. Far too often, correctional system workers do not receive recognition for their role as public safety professionals.
