Brady Anderson made a name for himself as the center fielder and lead off hitter for the Baltimore Orioles in the 90s. His sideburns may also be among the most famous to ever exist, but did you know the 3 time All-Star, who once hit 50 home runs in a season, was born in Silver Spring?

Anderson was born at Holy Cross hospital on January 18th, 1964. Though he was born here, he didn’t spend too much time in the area as his family moved to California with his family when he was very young and attended Carlsbad High School before enrolling at the University of California, Irvine prior to being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 1985. The Red Sox sent him — along with Curt Schilling — to the Orioles on July 29, 1988 in exchange for Mike Boddicker. Schilling didn’t stick around for too long, but Anderson went on to establish himself as one of the better center fielders and leadoff hitters of the ’90s.

Wootton Alumnus Utkarsh Ambudkar Stars in New Hulu Series ‘The Dropout’

A couple months back we discussed Wootton High School alumnus Utkarsh Ambudkar’s starting role on the CBS sitcom ‘Ghosts’, which debuted in October of last year and was recently renewed for a second season. Ambudkar also has a prominent role on the new Hulu miniseries, The Dropout.

The show is based on the ABC Audio podcast about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos. The show touches on experiences that likely motivated Holmes’ deceptions and lies, starting from her formative years as a pre-teen and going all the way to her exposure as a fraud. Ambudkar plays the role of Rakesh Madhava, a biotech engineer and worked at Theranos until 2008.

Meet Celebrity Chef Robert Irvine at Aspen Hill Liquor and Wine

Chef Robert Irvine will be holding a meet and greet at the Aspen Hill Liquor and Wine (13661 Connecticut Ave) on Friday, May 13th from 2-5pm. Irvine will be signing bottles of his Dry American Gin and Precision Distilled Vodka, which are now available at Montgomery County ABS stores. The event is free but registration is required.

On Friday, May 13th from 2pm – 5pm at the Aspen Hill Liquor and Wine Store in Silver Spring, MD Chef Robert Irvine will be in-store for a bottle signing event. Chef Robert Irvine is available for a meet and greet featuring his newly released products to Montgomery County, MD.

Montgomery County’s First Adaptive Kayaking Pier to be Dedicated on Sunday, May 1, at Riley’s Lock in Poolesville

Maryland to Dedicate This Year’s Sunflower Planting for Ukraine

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announces that it will dedicate its sunflower plantings to the people of Ukraine this spring. Each year, the department plants about 130 acres of sunflowers on 15 wildlife management areas across 18 Maryland counties, including McKee Beshers located on River Rd near Poolesville in Montgomery County. Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine, which remains besieged by the Russian military.

Per the Maryland Department of Natural Resources: The primary purpose of DNR’s plantings is to provide a source of food for mourning doves, cardinals, chickadees, blue jays, finches and other wildlife species, after the plants mature and dry. Pollinating insects like bees and butterflies also benefit from the abundant nectar and pollen that sunflowers produce. This year the plantings will serve a dual purpose by expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Displaying the large yellow flower has become an important way for many people around the world to express unity and support for Ukrainians who have suffered the war’s destruction and bravely resisted Vladimir Putiin’s aggression against them.

MCPS Elementary School All-County Art Show Now Until May 1 at Montgomery Mall

The MCPS Elementary School 2022 All-County Art Show began at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, April 26 and will be available for anyone to walk through/view until 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 1. The display, which was entirely virtual last year, has returned to the mall, and can be seen spread across the lower level of the mall.

This exhibition highlights outstanding artwork created in 135 schools by students in Pre-K through Grade 5. We hope you share our pride in these students’ accomplishments! They demonstrated a high level of critical thinking, a sensitivity to design elements, and an ability to persevere that enabled them to create these incredible works of art.

Montgomery County Sierra Club Group Endorses David Blair for County Executive

The Sierra Club Montgomery County Group announced Tuesday that they would be endorsing David Blair for Montgomery County Executive. The Sierra Club is an environmental protection and advocacy group, which has local chapters throughout all 50 states. According to their website, “the Montgomery County Maryland Group focuses on local issues, including improving public transit, maintaining clean water sources, supporting and monitoring the county’s Climate Protection Plan, and endorsing and supporting green candidates.” The Sierra Club said that Blair will be a strong and effective leader, and that he has an appealing environmental platform. In a press release, the Sierra Club said, “we understand that our endorsement of Mr. Blair will be met with surprise and even frustration by some. Montgomery County Sierra Club, though, believes that Mr. Blair is the best candidate overall to continue and expand real environmental progress in our County.”

Food Grown Home Launches First Tower Garden in MCPS at Einstein High School

In partnership with the gardening club Food Grown at Einstein, Food Grown Home is excited to announce that on April 22nd, the first-ever aeroponic Tower Garden will be established at Albert Einstein High School (AEHS). AEHS will be the first school in Montgomery County to implement this futuristic aeroponic food-growing technology, which will enable students to learn more about sustainable farming practices and empower them with the ability to grow their own food.

FGH is passionate about involving youth and young adults in food-growing STEM activities, which can illuminate career pathways into the fields of agriculture, horticulture, public health, environmental science, and more. Further, this STEM engagement provides inspiration for critical discussions on the viability of our food systems, opportunities for increased sustainability in their schools and local communities, strategies for reducing food insecurity, and how one can apply sustainable farming methods to increase access to nutritious food. FGH is hopeful to recruit more students from schools across MCPS to start their own Food Grown Home clubs and increase access to sustainable food-growing equipment that will help others learn to grow their own food.
