A Silver Spring couple that claimed a winning scratch-off lottery ticket worth $100,000 were among the biggest winners last week, according to the Maryland Lottery. The couple purchased the $30 $100,000 Extreme Cash scratch off from the Exxon gas station at 8384 Colesville Road in Silver Spring. Two Maryland Lottery players claimed prizes of $100,000 each last week on tickets sold in Annapolis and Silver Spring. Meanwhile, another 11 tickets worth $50,000 each were sold last week in Baltimore, Bladensburg, Bowie (2), Dundalk (2), Fort Washington, Parkville and Suitland (3). In all, 29 tickets across Maryland delivered prizes of $10,000 or more during the seven days ending Nov. 27, and the Maryland Lottery paid more than $27.6 million in prizes during that span.

Montgomery County Police Release 911 Call Made by Pilot After Plane Crashed Into Power Line Tower

Montgomery County Police have released the 9-1-1 call made by the pilot who crashed a small plane into a power line tower near Goshen Road and Rothbury Drive in Montgomery Village on Sunday evening. Maryland State Police identified the pilot as Patrick Merkle, 65, of Washington, D.C, and the passenger as Jan Williams, 66, of Louisiana. The two were rescued around 12:30am on Monday after spending seven hours in the tower, suspended more than 100ft. In a press briefing on Monday, Fire Chief Scott Goldstein reported that both individuals had been transported to the hospital and their conditions had improved. One patient was still in the hospital as of Monday afternoon. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.

In the 9-1-1 call, Merkle tells the dispatcher, “I’ve flown into a tower to the northwest of Gaithersburg Airport. It’s one of the electrical towers and, believe it or not, the aircraft is pinned in the tower and I don’t know how long we’re going to be able to stay here.” He also said that he believed the two had suffered head injuries from being banged around in the cockpit. Former MoCo Resident Sylvester Stallone Stars in His First Ever Series ‘Tulsa King’

Sylvester Stallone is one of the first people mentioned when talking celebrities with MoCo ties. Though he was born in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, his parents (Frank and Jackie Stallone) moved to the area in early 50s to open a beauty school. While living there, Sylvester spent some of his attended Woodlin Elementary School, Montgomery Hills Junior High, and was enrolled at Blair High School. Now, at age 76, Stallone is starring in his first ever television series Tulsa King.

The story of Tulsa King revolves around a former New York mafia boss Dwight “The General” Manfredi, played by Stallone. Manfredi is locked up for 25 years, obeys the code of silence/not ratting on your friends, and expects to be well compensated upon his release. Instead, he is sent down to Tulsa, where he’s tasked with “getting things started” for the mafia family.

Beyond MoCo: Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Responds To Call For Stabbing; Two Stabbing Victims Found, Armed Suspect Shot and Killed By Deputies

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office: At approximately 2:12 a.m., today, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies responded to the 5800 block of Haller Place for a call of service of a stabbing. Deputies and Frederick County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel located two victims and started life-saving measures. Three additional responding deputies encountered an armed suspect and discharged their firearms.

EMS pronounced the suspect dead on the scene. EMS transported one family member to Frederick Health Hospital, where that person died. EMS transported the other family member to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma via the Maryland State Police Trooper 2 helicopter and that person is in stable condition.

Montgomery County to Hold Free Flu Vaccination Clinic for Children on Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Silver Spring

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County will hold a free flu vaccination clinic for children from 1-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Dennis Avenue Health Center, located at 2000 Dennis Ave. in Silver Spring. Children ages six months to 18 are eligible to receive vaccinations at the clinic. Getting an annual flu shot has been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death. Flu vaccinations are also available through private health providers and at retail locations throughout the community. Find a flu vaccination at vaccines.gov. Although the vaccination clinic is free, appointments are required. The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year. 2022 Burtonsville Holiday Toy Drive Runs Until December 9

Since 2019, the Burtonsville community has stepped up to help others in need around the holiday season with their annual Burtonsville Holiday Toy Drive. These successful local toy drives have resulted in over 400 Burtonsville-area children receiving gifts. A video was created and posted by Lyn David, local Burtonsville resident, and leader of this successful effort. When asked why Lyn is so passionate about this effort, she said, “It has been so rewarding to see the Burtonsville community come together to provide for families in need around the holidays. The smiles on the faces of the children as we give them their gifts motivate us to come back every year and work harder.”

This year, the community realizes many families are facing financial struggles and they have an opportunity to help. A group of dedicated and engaged volunteers have generously donated their resources in hopes of delivering the most successful Burtonsville holiday toy drive ever.

Backed by an initial allocation of $1.5 million in state funds, the ACE Loan Fund is now open and accepting applications, fully dedicated to supporting and uplifting those crucial small businesses that may have struggled to secure a loan from a traditional bank or lender.

Improperly Discarded Smoking Materials Revealed As Cause For Monday Morning Fire

In an update to yesterday’s fire on the 3900 block of Denfeld Ave in Kensington, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) have determined that improperly discarded smoking materials and cardboard boxes on the deck were the cause of a fire that caused approximately $60K in damages. One adult suffered minor injuries trying to move the cardboard boxes away from the house.

Monday’s report: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire in the 3900blk of Denfeld Ave, near Brandywine Street, in Kensington on Monday, November 28 around 8am. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire appeared to have started on the exterior (deck) and extended to the house. The fire has been extinguished and all occupants are out of the home. EMS is transporting one adult (civilian) with non-life threatening injuries. We will post an update when more information becomes available.

Local Singer, Pete Looney, Has Passed Away; Celebration of Life to Take Place in December (New Location)

Local singer Pete Looney, who has been providing entertainment across the county and DC Metro Area for years, has passed away according to a post on his Facebook page. His children, Pat and Monika, released the following statement announcing a Celebration of Life that will take place on Sunday, December 11th (now in a new location).

The Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, December 11th from 6-9pm at Brookeville Beer Farm (20315 A Georgia Ave. Brookeville, MD 20833). Light bites and some wine will be provided. The event organizers ask anyone who is planning to attend to mark “going” on the Facebook event page so that they can plan accordingly.

Sally Beauty Supply to Close Permanently Next Month in Germantown

Sally Beauty Supply will close its Germantown store (20650 Seneca Meadows Parkway), located at The Shops of Seneca Meadows, on Thursday, December 9th, according to a representative we spoke to earlier today. We were told the shop has been there since the shopping center was built nearly a decade ago.

The Texas-based retail chain will be closing 350 of its stores by the end of this year. The company operates 4,500 stores in the US and as of now we only heard of Germantown and the Olney location closing in Montgomery County.There is no word on its replacement, but the shopping center is now home to the recently opened Crumbl cookies and has F45 and Playful Pack coming soon.
