Various MCPS Schools Give Back and Give Thanks

MCPS students and staff are spending the days before Thanksgiving break celebrating, serving and giving back to their local communities. Below you’ll see just some of the ways MCPS students and staff have recently given back:

Walter Johnson High School welcomed nearly 150 senior citizens for a Thanksgiving feast on Nov. 16. It was the first time since 2019 that the school held its annual Senior Citizens Luncheon. The event came complete with a traditional turkey dinner and all the trimmings, served by students, a performace, and dancing. The guests were from senior centers and senior living facilities in the area. Click to see a photo gallery.

Wood Acres Community Gathers Clothing, Food, Gift Cards for Donations: This Thanksgiving season, Wood Acres Elementary School students and community have collected clothing, non-perishable food items and grocery store gift cards to donate to local families, as well as to Bread for the City, a nonprofit organization that works to reduce poverty in Washington, D.C.

Whetstone Opens its Doors to Families for This Month’s Family Market: The Food Bank partnered with Whetstone Elementary School to provide fresh fruit and veggies, shelf stables, clothes, shoes, books, backpacks, and health resources.

Flower Valley Collects Food Donations for Manna, Tree House: Flower Valley Elementary School held a schoolwide harvest parade. Students dressed up to show their school spirit and each class decorated a float (lunch cart). Visitors came to see the parade and dropped non-perishables into the students’ carts. The Peacemakers, a student mediator program, gathered and organized the food donations, which will be distributed to Manna Food and to the Tree House Child Advocacy Center of Montgomery County.

Shady Grove Middle School Holds Annual Turkey Trot: The Annual Shady Grove Turkey Trot is a tradition where students and staff run a mile together. The top boy and girl on each grade level will receive a Thanksgiving Turkey, and the top three boys and top three girls on each grade level will win a 2023 Turkey Trot T-shirt.
